Description: One painting book entitled Home Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1930. The book is comprised of a series of double illustrations; for each set, one image is printed in color, the other is printed in outline form. The outline image was meant to be painted. On the front cover is a color illustration of two children picking flowers. A collage of colored chalk against a black background borders the principal illustration. "McLoughlin Bros. Inc., Springfield, Mass." is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover; "2044, made in USA" is printed in the right-hand corner. The back cover is blank. The endpapers are illustrated with geometric designs. Directions for using the book and mixing paint colors are on the recto of the first page. The illustrations are printed on one side of each leaf. Some of the images within the book include scenes of playing children, animals, flowers and food. Few of the images have been filled in.

Drawing and Painting Book

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1910, entitled Drawing and Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., Springfield, Massachusetts. This book is 24 unnumbered pages in length, and contains illustrations for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph illustration of a girl reading a book while imaginary fairies and butterflies fly around her. "Made in U.S.A. McLoughlin Bros. Inc., Springfield, Mass." is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is a chromolithograph image of a jar of paintbrushes and several jars of paint. The title page features an illustration of young Dutch children and descriptive text beneath the title: "A Drawing and Painting Book designed according to the best art methods of starting with simple design and color and progressing to more advanced subjects." Some of the illustrations are in pairs, with one printed in color and the other in outline form, which was meant for coloring. Included are images of people, buildings and animals. Some of the images have been colored with crayon or watercolor.

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1905, entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length and is comprised of chromolithograph and black and white lithographs in outline form for coloring. The front cover features an image of two children wrapping a gift box. "0701, McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the lower left-hand corner beneath the image. The back cover is not illustrated, but the paper is decorated in a simple pattern. "Directions" are printed on the front pastedown, and the title page is illustrated with a black and white image of a boy painting a fence. All of the illustrations are of animals; some have been colored. A ms. inscription in ink is on the title page. "2.-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

Marine and Landscape Studies: A Painting Book

One painting book entitled Marine and Landscape Studies: A Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. The front cover shows a landscape tacked to a wood frame. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for coloring;" and these also include directions on how to mix paints. The book contains 12 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The latter have all been filled in with colored pencil or crayon using the complementary color image as a guide.

One painting book entitled Spring Blossoms Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, ca. 1910. This book is comprised of 4 chromolithograph plates and 4 black and white copies of those plates, intended for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a girl carrying pink flower blossoms in her apron. "McLoughlin Bro's, New York" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. Instructions are printed on the inside of the front cover. The inside of the back cover is blank. Some of the images have been colored in with watercolor.

Flower Studies: A Painting Book

One painting book entitled Flower Studies: A Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover features poppies bordered by other flowers. On the back cover in the lower right-hand corner appears the company's trademark and "No. 84 1/2." The title page is entitled Object Painting Book. The inside front cover depicts a mock palette of colors--red, green, yellow, blue and purple--which were meant to be used with the book, as explained in the instructions printed on the inside of the back cover. Six color images, including the cover and title page, are represented. Four of these within the book mirror four identical images printed only in outline. None of the outlined images have been filled in. On the upper edge of the title page, in pen, is the name "Catherine P. Stafford" and below that, in pencil, "$4.50". On the back inside cover, also in pen, is the same name--"Catherine P. Stafford".

One painting book entitled Pictorial Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1898. This book is comprised of 16 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph plates and black and white images for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of two children playing in the snow. "Copyright 1898 by McLoughlin Bros., New York" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is green and unillustrated. "A few Practical Instructions for Young Painters" is printed on the inside of the front cover. The inside of the back cover is blank. Each of the interior leaves is illustrated; poetic text accompanies each image. All of the black and white images have been colored in with either crayon or watercolor. "Clifford Mattson, Bantam, Conn., Feb. 26, 1903" is written in ms., in ink, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover. "Gertrude B. Brock" is written in ms., in pencil, across the first page. "5" and "9-" (price) have been written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.
