The Little Draughtsman

Description
One drawing book entitled The Little Draughtsman, published by J. Scholz, Mayence (Mainz?), ca. 1850. This book is comprised of 8 leaves of illustrations. Each page is divided into 2 to 4 sections; some contain an image in outline form against a grid and another next to it without the grid and 2 spaces for copying; on other pages the image is printed once and space for copying is left next to or below the image. The first page is numbered "6", but all other pages are unnumbered. Some of the images included are an elephant, fruit, and a woman carrying a basket. The front cover is printed in red ink on yellow paper, and features a decorative frame and vignettes of children in the center. Additional, explanatory text on the front cover below the title reads: "a series of little books containing the elements of every species of the art of drawing, offers to the pupil but very easy models, which he may copy, either with the pen or pencil. The little draughtsman tends to exercise the hand of the little ones, to sharpen the eye and to excite the liking to free-hand drawing. By the choice of its models, its handy size and moderate price, this collection has become very popular amongst our youth."

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Young Folks' Drawing Book, published by Billings, Clapp & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1886. This advertisement/drawing book promotes both Nichol's Bark & Iron and encourages drawing practice. It is 16 unnumbered pages in length, and contains manufacturer's advertisements, testimonials (dated 1884-1886), and illustrations for copying. None of the illustrations within the booklet have been copied. "Trautmann Bailey & Blampey, N.Y." (chromolithography) is printed at the bottom of the front cover.

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Easy Drawing for Little Ones, published by Fleischmann Co., New York, ca. 1885?. This 8-page promotional drawing booklet contains an illustrated "story" of a little girl who makes bread using Fleischmann's yeast. Each page contains a few lines of rhyming text. Bound in between the images are leaves of tracing paper. The chromolithographed front cover features an image of a young girl and boy who are making bread. "No. 16" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. The insides of the front and back cover contain advertising text for Fleischmann's yeast, as does the back cover. Some of the images have been traced.

    One painting and drawing book entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing, published by Charles E. Graham & Co., New York, ca. 1900. The series title is 0701--Paint Book Series. The front cover of the book shows a little girl holding a palette of watercolors in one hand and a page of her paintings in the other. The back cover repeats the title of the book and features an image of two children asleep in a meadow and watched by four rabbits. The book contains twelve images, some printed in outline, others color printed to show color schemes. Most of the outlined images have been filled in with wax crayon. In the upper right-hand corner of the front cover in pencil is "50 [cents] 6448".

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled "Satin Gloss" Drawing Book, for Little Folks, published by David S. Brown & Co., New York, ca. 1885. This 8-page booklet is a promotional piece for Satin Gloss soap and is comprised of 8 different lithograph advertising images, each with a sheet of tracing paper bound in. The covers are chromolithographs; the front cover features a little girl holding two rabbits; the back cover pictures two little girls, one of whom is whispering in the ear of the other. Each of the images for tracing are captioned with promotional phrases; an image of a horse-drawn cart is captioned "This is one of the trucks that delivers Satin Gloss Soap to your grocer." The insides of the front and back covers contain advertising text. Each of the images has been copied onto tracing paper.

This drawing book is a promotional piece for Mrs. Dinsmore's Cough and Croup Balsam. It contains 8 pages of black and white images of butterflies and tracing paper in front of each page, for copying. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the front cover features several butterflies and paint brushes, the back cover image is a little girl in a pink hat, standing next to a vase of roses. The inside front and back cover feature promotional and advertising text. Some of the images have been traced onto the tracing paper, and some of the traced and original images have been colored in with crayons.

    One drawing/painting book, ca. 1905, entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length and is comprised of chromolithograph and black and white lithographs in outline form for coloring. The front cover features an image of two children wrapping a gift box. "0701, McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the lower left-hand corner beneath the image. The back cover is not illustrated, but the paper is decorated in a simple pattern. "Directions" are printed on the front pastedown, and the title page is illustrated with a black and white image of a boy painting a fence. All of the illustrations are of animals; some have been colored. A ms. inscription in ink is on the title page. "2.-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
