One folder of images for painting entitled Prang's Outline Pictures with Directions for Coloring, Series 1, Children, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1888. Within the folder are 9 outline images for coloring; each is titled with the subject, generally characters from fairy tales. Printed in the lower left-hand corner of each leaf is "Copyright 1888 by L. Prang Co. Boston." Also within the folder are three printed sheets: one contains coloring instructions, one is an informational piece about the set, and the third is a manufacturer's advertisement for Prang's Christmas Cards.

Cross Drawing and Painting Glass for Perfecting Visual Power

One framed glass drawing slate designed and patented by Anson K. Cross, Ashland, Mass., copyright 1914. An instructional sheet with directions for use, entitled The 'Cross' Drawing and Painting Glass for Perfecting Visual Power, is mounted on the back of the slate. The glass slate is contained within a wooden frame, and below it are two circular magnifying glasses. Explanations and directions for use are printed on a paper entitled "Directions for Use". Accompanying this glass slate are three grease crayons, designed as either Cross crayons or for use with the Cross Slate. A leveler containing red liquid is at the top of the slate and is intact.

Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors

One art instruction book entitled Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors, by Marion Kemble, published by S.W. Tilton & Company, Boston, copyright 1882. Following a preface and an introduction, the book is informally divided into 4 sections, the first of which is entitled "Perspective". The remaining sections are: "Water colors," "Directions for coloring". The book is 66 pages in length, with an additional 13 unnumbered pages of testimonials and advertisements at the end. Two pages of publisher's advertisements for "Self-Instructive Lessons in drawing and painting in water-colors" precede the title page. Each section within the book is illustrated with line drawings; the section entitled "Directions for coloring" contains 7 full-page illustrations. Of these, 6 are numbered and are accompanied by textual instruction for painting. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Bulfinch's Mythology. The Age of Fable" edited by Rev. E.E. Hale. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "H.N.[?] Gey.[?]" is written in ms. in ink, in the upper right-hand corner, "V.B. Cummings" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

Animal Stencils: Easy and Simple Designs for First Steps in Drawing in the Home or School

One boxed set of paper stencils entitled Animal Stencils: Easy and Simple Designs for First Steps in Drawing in the Home or School, manufactured by the Milton Bradley Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1915. The set is comprised of 17 paper stencils, each with "Bradley" embossed in the lower right-hand corner. Also included are 12 sheets of brown and green paper for drawing/tracing the images; most of them have been used. Some of the animals represented by the stencils are: a fish, rabbit, cow, horse, turkey, a horse. There are two fish stencils. The set is housed within a paperboard box; the box is illustrated with a chromolithograph of a horse, a cow, and a dog in a field. "4306" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the lid; "Milton Bradley Co., Springfield, Mass., U.S.A." is printed in the lower right-hand corner. Directions for use are printed on the underside of the lid. Some of the stencils have been used.

One painting book entitled Home Painting Gallery, by F.I. Wetherbee, published by M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago, copyright 1908. This painting book is comprised of chromolithograph images, black and white images for coloring, and blank pages for drawing. Descriptive and instructional text accompanies each image. The front cover is a chromolithograph collage of images which include a lace-covered table, a horse, a seated woman, and a boy writing in a chair. The back cover is blank. The images and exercises within this book range from very simple (drawing straight lines) to more complex coloring and shading. Many of the lithograph images have been colored in. "21-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. "Annie McInley" is written in ms., in pencil, opposite the title page.

Birds to Paint

One painting book entitled Birds to Paint, published by the Saalfield Publishing Co., Akron, Ohio, 1910. The front cover features a parrot with a yellow head. On the back cover is a child's writing; the name "Louise" can be read. Thirty images of various birds are included, six of which have an identical color image. These color images were meant to guide the student in the use of color. The first page describes the book as: "a paint book for boys and girls which supplies sketches ready to color." Most of the images have been filled in with crayon rather than watercolor.
