One painting book entitled Juvenile Painting Gallery, by F. I. Wetherbee, published by M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago, copyright 1908. The subtitle on the title page reads: "Being a collection of the most artistic color schemes ever produced in an instructive painting book, teaching accuracy, harmony, beauty and color with pencil, paint and brush. Complete instructions for the little artist." This painting book is comprised of chromolithographic plates and black and white outline drawings for coloring. Descriptive, instructive and playful text accompanies each image. The lessons progress from fundamental to more complex, and include lessons on form, perspective, shape, proportion and shading. All of the images in this book are the same as those in Box 37 Env. 04. The front cover of this book is a chromolithograph of a boy at an easel outdoors painting a picture of a girl. The back cover is blank.

This book is comprised of 4 chromolithograph plates and 4 black and white copies of those plates, intended for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a girl carrying pink flower blossoms in her apron. "McLoughlin Bro's, New York" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. Instructions are printed on the inside of the front cover. The inside of the back cover is blank. Some of the images have been colored in with watercolor.

One painting book entitled Fun and Frolic Painting Book, published by De Wolfe, Fiske & Co., Boston, ca. 1915. This book is 24 unnumbered pages in length, and is comprised of a combination of 4 chromolithograph illustrations and several lithograph (black and white) illustrations for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a young girl holding a painting palette, and surrounded by 8 animated, dancing paint tubes. The interior images are scenes from various fairy tales: the Three Little Bears, Miss Muffet, Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Kittens. Some of the lithograph images have been traced in pencil. "Instructions for the Little Artist" are printed on the inside of the front cover.

One painting book entitled Pictorial Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1898. This book is comprised of 16 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph plates and black and white images for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of two children playing in the snow. "Copyright 1898 by McLoughlin Bros., New York" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is green and unillustrated. "A few Practical Instructions for Young Painters" is printed on the inside of the front cover. The inside of the back cover is blank. Each of the interior leaves is illustrated; poetic text accompanies each image. All of the black and white images have been colored in with either crayon or watercolor. "Clifford Mattson, Bantam, Conn., Feb. 26, 1903" is written in ms., in ink, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover. "Gertrude B. Brock" is written in ms., in pencil, across the first page. "5" and "9-" (price) have been written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

Something Pretty to Paint

One painting book entitled Something Pretty to Paint, published by Ernest Nister, London and E.P. Dutton & Co., New York, ca. 1915. This book is comprised of 10 plates, some chromolithographs and some lithographs, of perforated cards, largely containing floral images and Biblical verse. The chromolithographs are samples, and the images in outline form are intended for coloring and sending. Each leaf of the lithograph cards is perforated along the inner edge, and each leaf is comprised of four separate cards, with perforations in between. The front cover is a chromolithograph image of a girl in a pink dress holding her landscape painting. The back cover is blank. "Printed in Bavaria, 399" is printed at the bottom of the front cover and of the title page. "$4805amo/10-" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1915, entitled The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book, by F. I. Wetherbee, published by M. A. Donohue & Co., Chicago. This book is comprised of 44 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations for painting. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a seated child who is painting at an easel. "M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover illustration is of a girl on a low seat reading a book. "Directions for the Little Artist" are printed on the front pastedown, opposite the title page. A few descriptive lines are printed below the title: "Being a collection of the most artistic color schemes ever produced in an instructive painting book, teaching accuracy, harmony, beauty and color with pencil, paint and brush. Complete instructions for the little artist." Most, but not all, of the images appear in pairs, one colored and the other in outline form, for coloring. Some of the illustrations have been colored.
