    One portfolio of unbound images, copyright 1931, entitled Our Washington as the Artist sees It: 20 sketches of impressive beauty in the national capital, Series No. 1, by J. B. Himmelheber, published by Grafico, Washington, D.C. This portfolio is comprised of 15 images of buildings and monuments in Washington, D.C. The set of plates are laid into a brown paper portfolio that is illustrated with an image of George Washington. Some of the images included in the set are: the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, Columbus Memorial Fountain, The White House, The National Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and the Library of Congress. A description is printed on the verso of each plate. "[Copyright symbol] J.B.H. 1931, Reproduced + Published Wash. D.C. Box 243 Grafico" is printed on the back cover of the portfolio.

    One painting book entitled The Mother Goose Parade, by Anita de Campi, published by The Reilly & Britton Co., Chicago, 1914. The subtitle on both the title page and the front cover reads: A Combination of Painting Book and Scissors Play for Children's Hand Made Nursery Borders. This activity book is comprised of black and white illustrations designed to be colored and cut out. Each drawing is accompanied by a Mother Goose rhyme; the images illustrate the rhymes. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a long parade of Mother Goose characters, led by a scissors-wielding Mother Goose. The back cover is not illustrated. On the verso of the title page is text which explains the use of this book: to color and cut out the images, and use them to decorate a child's room. "Copyright 1914- By The Reilly & Britton Co." is printed below this text. Each of the illustrations throughout the book are signed by Anita de Campi. Some of the images have been colored. "Clara Jackson, 90 Beacon St., Boston, Mass." is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front flyleaf, under the printed text "This book belongs to".

    One portfolio of nine leaflets by the Munsell Color Co., Inc., entitled Color in Painting: a portfolio of eight leaflets with notes on the use of color in the paintings which are reproduced in direct color from the originals, by Margaret McAdory, published by Binney & Smith Company, New York, copyright 1926. The eight images reproduced on these leaflets are listed on the front cover of the portfolio: "The Nativity" by Luini; "The Lace Maker" by Vermeer; "The Blessing" by Chardin; "Still Life" by Chardin; "Madame le Brun" by Le Brun; "The Dance of the Nymphs" by Corot; "The Gleaners" by Millet; and "Nymph Pool" by Monet. This portfolio is folded into thirds; the left-hand flap contains text, and the right-hand flap serves as the front cover. The center section holds the leaflets, and on the bottom protective flap is printed "Compliments of Binney & Smith Company, Makers of Crayons and Water Color Paints, New York". The back cover of the portfolio features a bibliography. The first leaflet (4 p.) discusses the "General Instructions for the Study of Color". Each of the subsequent leaflets is a folded single sheet (4 p.), with the portfolio title above a 2 3/4" x 3 3/4" (approx.) reproduction of each painting. The text within each leaflet discusses the painting, addressing both color and composition. The last page of each is an in-depth color analysis, with charts, of the painting and reference to isolated elements and the Munsell Color system.

  • The Adventures of Ceresota

    The Adventures of Ceresota

    One painting book entitled The Adventures of Ceresota, published by Northwestern Consolidated Milling Co., Minneapolis, Minnesota, producers of Ceresota Flour, copyright 1912. The front cover shows Ceresota contemplating his image on a sack of flour; the subtitle, A Painting Book in Story Form, appears below the image. The back cover features the company's trademark in the upper left, an image of Ceresota cutting bread in the center, and "Serial No. 143" in the lower-right corner. The inside front cover contains copyright information, the inside back cover has "[g]eneral instructions for young artists" for using "Japanese Water Colors." There are 24 images in the book, 12 in color and 12 in outline. Each outlined image was to be filled in by using the complementary color image at its side and by following the instructions preceding each group of images. Each outline image could be cut out of the book as instructed on the "cut here" line printed on the page near the gutter. None of the images have been in removed from this particular copy. The book also explains why the flour is called Ceresota, and how Ceresota's image came to be on sacks of flour. The numeral "7--" has been penciled onto the upper-right corner of the first page.

    One set of art reproductions entitled Artist's Scrap Book, arranged by Pedro J. Lemos, published by The School Arts Magazine, Davis Press, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1929. This portfolio of art reproductions is comprised of 104 numbered plates and an illustrated publisher's advertisement for the portfolio. Each of the plates contain numerous images of artworks by a variety of artists. Each plate is numbered and the images are grouped and labeled by category. Some of the categories included are: Hillside Houses, Decorative Trees, Fantastic Figures, Busy Women, Feminine Activities, Colonial People, Figure Groups, Children of the Eighties, Foreign Lands, Birds, Animals, and Flowers. "Courtesy of the Ladies' Home Journal" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of each plate. The set of plates is housed within an illustrated paperboard folder; a paper label containing the contents list is mounted to the inside of the front cover. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms., in pencil, on some of the plates.

    One penmanship book entitled Harper's Writing Books: Symmetrical Penmanship with Marginal Drawing Lessons, for Schools and Families, published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1868. The subtitle reads: School and Family Series: Writing and Drawing, In Ten Numbers, Number 5. This penmanship practice book is 24 pages in length. Across the top of each page are the letters, phrases or sentences which are to be copied in the lined spaces below. Along the outer vertical margin of each page is a shaded block of figures and drawing exercises to be copied. On the front cover, the title surrounds several images and vignettes of people writing and drawing. The centered vignette shows three students seated at a table, writing. Instructional text, including specific directions for Book 5, are printed on the inside of the front cover, and continue on to the inside of the back cover. The back cover also features instructions for using and copying the additional exercises found in the margins of the book. None of the exercises have been completed.
