Description: One portfolio of unbound images, copyright 1931, entitled Our Washington as the Artist sees It: 20 sketches of impressive beauty in the national capital, Series No. 1, by J. B. Himmelheber, published by Grafico, Washington, D.C. This portfolio is comprised of 15 images of buildings and monuments in Washington, D.C. The set of plates are laid into a brown paper portfolio that is illustrated with an image of George Washington. Some of the images included in the set are: the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, Columbus Memorial Fountain, The White House, The National Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and the Library of Congress. A description is printed on the verso of each plate. "[Copyright symbol] J.B.H. 1931, Reproduced + Published Wash. D.C. Box 243 Grafico" is printed on the back cover of the portfolio.

Artist's Scrap Book

One set of art reproductions entitled Artist's Scrap Book, arranged by Pedro J. Lemos, published by The School Arts Magazine, Davis Press, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1929. This portfolio of art reproductions is comprised of 104 numbered plates and an illustrated publisher's advertisement for the portfolio. Each of the plates contain numerous images of artworks by a variety of artists. Each plate is numbered and the images are grouped and labeled by category. Some of the categories included are: Hillside Houses, Decorative Trees, Fantastic Figures, Busy Women, Feminine Activities, Colonial People, Figure Groups, Children of the Eighties, Foreign Lands, Birds, Animals, and Flowers. "Courtesy of the Ladies' Home Journal" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of each plate. The set of plates is housed within an illustrated paperboard folder; a paper label containing the contents list is mounted to the inside of the front cover. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms., in pencil, on some of the plates.

One boxed painting set entitled Craft Master, New Artist, Series 24, NA-2432 or Summer Quietude, manufactured by Palmer Pann Corp., Toledo, Ohio, copyright 1958. A paint by numbers set, the kit includes the original 24 jars of numbered paints, one jar of brush cleaner, one paint brush, and an 8-page newspaper-like color catalog of other paint-by-number kits for sale. The two companion "canvasses", entitled 'Summer Quietude', are lacking. The top lid of the cardboard box is illustrated with an image of a wooden palette, a red jar of paint, and a paintbrush that has painted the words "Craft Master." Also pictured, in the upper right-hand corner, are the two paintings included in this kit. Printed on the palette on the front cover is "genuine Kenro artist oil paints in easy to open screw-top jars." Also printed along the lower edge of the top lid is "[Copyright symbol] 1958 P.P. Corp." and "Litho in U.S.A."

Two clippings of the United States Capitol Building

Two clippings, ca. 1925, both are images of the United States Capitol Building, Washington, D.C. One is titled "At the Gateway of Washington"; the other "The Glory of the National Capitol at Night." The first image is copyright Harris and Ewing, Washington, D.C.; the second is copyright Ernest L. Crandall. Neither image, reproductions of photographs, are credited, and their source is unidentified. The newspaper or magazine from which these items were removed is unidentified. The dimensions given are for the larger of the two items. Title supplied by cataloger.

Tom Sawyer Painting Set

One boxed painting set entitled Tom Sawyer Painting Set, manufactured by Standard Solophone Manufacturing Company, N.Y., in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, copyright 1931. This set is comprised of 30 cakes of watercolor paint, two metal dishes, four small tubes of watercolor paints, 8 colored wax crayons, 8 outline images for painting, 2 color images (stills) from the movie, and a 4-page "'Tom Sawyer' Nuart Poster Color Guide." The images in this set are based on the Paramount Pictures movie Tom Sawyer starring Jackie Coogan as Tom. Four of the eight paint-by-number outline images have been completed. On the lid of the box is a scene of 'Tom' painting a portrait of 'Junior Durkin', who is seated in front of him. An artist's palette and a box of paints are behind 'Tom'. Below the image of the two boys is printed "Characters from the Paramount Photo-Play." "Copyright 1931" and "Made by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., N.Y. Made in USA" and "Picture contents copyright 1931 by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., Inc." are printed in the lower left and right-hand corners, respectively, of the lid. The watercolor paint inside the box has been lightly used; the crayons have not been used.

New York Artists' Classmanual No. 6, Coloured, Consisting of Twelve Landscapes

Visual Materials

One set of drawing cards entitled New York Artists' Classmanual No. 6, Coloured, consisting of twelve Landscapes, by Ed. Purcell, published by J.C. Riker, 129 Fulton St. [New York]. This set of 12 color lithograph cards consists of nature scenes- such as waterfalls and lakes- and is numbered 13-24. Each scene is signed by Ed. Purcell. Some scenes are vertically oriented on the plate, others are horizontally oriented. These images are printed on paper, rather than a heavier card stock as might be expected of a drawing card. The cards are enclosed in a paper portfolio, which is printed in a brilliant blue and gold; a floral frame surrounds the title and publication information. The lithographer's name is also printed on the portfolio cover, but only the word "Lithog." is readable.

The Dixon Manual for Metal Artists

One art instruction book entitled The Dixon Manual for Metal Artists: Designs, Complete Instructions, Illustrated Work Sheets, published by William Dixon Incorporated, Newark, New Jersey, copyright 1937. This 30-leaf portfolio is comprised of 19 illustrated project sheets and 10 pages of guidelines and instructions to accompany the projects. The first leaf of the portfolio contains general prefatory matter. The projects are designed to be "suitable for both beginners and advanced" metal workers. Some of them include: a rectangular box, an ashtray, a candy dish, a candlestick holder, bookends and jewelry. Each of the project sheets and the instructional sheets are numbered; 2-30. The portfolio is orange with black lettering and design. A small, nearly-square image of a man hand-tooling a metal cup is below the title on the front cover. The back cover and the insides of the covers are blank.
