One set of drawing cards entitled Bartholomew's Progressive Drawing Cards, in five numbers, No. 1, by W. N. Bartholomew, published by Cyrus G. Cooke, Boston, 1860. This set includes 11 numbered, one-sided lithograph images within a paperboard slipcover. Card 1 is lacking. The cards are intended for use with a drawing slate; each card would be placed into a holder at one end of the slate, and the image copied onto the slate. Most of the cards bear a single image, but some contain two or three images. The images are identical to a portion of those found in Bartholomew's Drawing Books and include fences, houses, buildings and barns. The instructions for use of these cards, lesson by lesson, are printed on both sides of the slipcase. There is a cutaway notch at the top of the opening of the slipcase for ease of removal. The dimensions provided are for the slipcase.

One set of drawing cards entitled American Drawing-Cards, First Series, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, 1873. This set includes 7 drawing cards, printed on both sides of each card. There are 14 numbered lessons, each with white-on-black lithograph illustrations. Also included is a set of directions: "Rules for the Guidance of Pupils using the American Drawing Cards." On the verso of this card is printed a 5-inch long rule measure. The lessons progress from simple horizontal, vertical and parallel lines (lesson no. 1) to moulding and interlacing forms (lesson no. 14, example 42). The cards are within a protective paper envelope. "Johnnie Fray[?]" is written in ms. at the top of the first card.

One set of drawing cards entitled Grammar School Drawing Cards of Elementary Design, by Lucius B. Morgan, printed by Grout & Putman, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1875. The envelope and cards identify this set as the "Second Series." The envelope also identifies Mr. Morgan as the "Teacher of Drawing in the Public Schools, Worcester, Mass." The envelope contains three double-sided cards. The six images on the cards contain simple leaf and flower designs which are then incorporated into more complex designs. For example, there is one image labeled "The Ivy" which show the simple ivy leaf and then the same leaf used in a repeating border and a fan design. Each card is labeled and has a set of designs. The cards have not been printed with identifying numbers. "Florence Belcher" and "$25.00" (price) are written in ms. on the cover.

One set of drawing cards entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part I, by B.F. Nutting, printed by M. J. Whipple, Boston, Massachusetts, 1848. Originally the set came with 18 cards; only seventeen are present in this set--card 10 is missing. Each of the cards is single-sided, and bear a "1" in the upper left-hand corner and a different number in the upper right-hand corner. One card is unnumbered and appears to have been added at a later time. The cards are each described in an instructional pamphlet, eight pages in length, which is entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, In Four Parts: Eighteen Cards in Each, Presenting Carefully Drawn Examples, and Accompanied by Directions Illustrating the First Principles of Drawing; for the Use of Schools and Families. The pamphlet also features instructions in basic drawing techniques. On the upper right-hand corner of the pamphlet's cover there is a handwritten note, in pencil, which reads "17 (of 18) cards / #10 Lacking/ 35-/ c.f. xix of Drepperd Amer. Draw. [?] NY 1946." The cards and the pamphlet were originally enclosed in an envelope with a green-criss-cross design.

One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Young Folks' Drawing Book, published by Billings, Clapp & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1886. This advertisement/drawing book promotes both Nichol's Bark & Iron and encourages drawing practice. It is 16 unnumbered pages in length, and contains manufacturer's advertisements, testimonials (dated 1884-1886), and illustrations for copying. Each of the illustrations are printed against a numbered and lettered grid; a blank grid is printed on the facing page for copying. The front and back covers feature chromolithograph illustrations; on the front cover is an image of children drawing and playing, on the back, a young boy sits wearing a red tam and sash, with the tam bearing the name of "Nichol's Bark & Iron." None of the illustrations within the booklet have been copied. "Trautmann Bailey & Blampey, N.Y." (chromolithography) is printed at the bottom of the front cover.

The pamphlet describes each of the cards in the set, the number in the pamphlet corresponds to the card's number in the upper right-hand corner. Instructions are given in basic drawing techniques. The original envelope in which the cards and pamphlet were enclosed is also included. On the inside of the envelope, in pencil, is the following note: "See Dreppard for long [note?] p.16/ Part I complete/ Parts II (12) & IV (11) incomplete/ Lot as is/ Rare (NYPL has Part II only.)/ 40-." Written in ms., in the upper right-hand corner of the pamphlet's cover, is "40-." (price).
