    One wooden lap desk labeled Professor Nast's Sketching Rack for Young Artists, manufactured by C. C. Shepherd, New York, ca. 1885. The sub-title reads "The most important part of the Education of Children, in Drafting or Pencil Sketching. This Rack furnishes a complete outfit for that purpose." The desk is comprised of a wooden box with a hinged "double" lid. The uppermost lid is the smaller of the two, and bears the item label on the top surface, and provides space for holding a sample image (for copying) underneath. The second lid, also slanted, serves as the lid that covers the lower portion of the box. The top of this lid is covered with blue blotting paper. The box includes 12 sheets of woodblock images and 3 paper-covered wooden slats containing images for copying. The wooden slats illustrate penmanship forms and basic geometric shapes. Also included are 2 sheets of paper containing illustrations copied, in pencil, from two of the sample woodblock images, and a sheet of used blotting paper. "Ernest" is written in ms., in red chalk, on the blue blotting paper. "For {Harry N. Rice & Minnie L. Rice} Flo" is written in ms., in pencil, on the underside of the box bottom.

    One stone drawing slate patented by C.C. Shepherd, ca. 1877. The slate is contained within a wooden frame, which is supported at one end by a hollow wedge, used to store rectangular slats, which function as drawing cards with white and black illustrations. On the underside of the wedge is a paper label which reads: "Portable Slate Desk." The copy is placed in a direct line of the focus of the eye, so as to enable the pupil to see the Copy, and the execution of the same. ... Patented January 1877. C.C. Shepherd." At the top of the slate are slots where the rectangular slats slide in.

This is an 8 page promotional piece for summer vacations at Chautauqua Institute. It is printed on green paper, and illustrated with images of various activities offered at the Institute. Laid in is a single sheet of "Supplementary Courses to be given in the Art Education Department, Chautauqua Summer Schools, in 1930." Dimensions given are for the folded brochure.

    Shepherd’s Improved Transparent Slates, With Rotating Copies

    One glass drawing slate entitled Shepherd’s Improved Transparent Slates, With Rotating Copies, manufactured by C.C. Shepherd, New Jersey, patented March 2, 1874. The glass slate is missing. Remaining is the wooden box frame and the scroll, which contains images and words for copying. An introduction and instructions are printed at the head of the scroll: "Parents, encourage your children to learn to write. Shepherd's Drawing and Writing Slates, with Rotating Copies, is the best method to adopt. The copy is placed at the lower half of the Slate; after tracing it on the surface of the Slate, it is removed to the upper half; and any alterations or additions may be made from sight or the copy." "Patented March 2, 1874" is printed on the label mounted to the underside of the box; "Patented March 2, 1875" is printed below the introduction on the scroll.

    Three promotional flyers for Chautauqua Summer Schools, 1930. The three pieces are in a paper envelope addressed to Miss Mabel Spofford. The first piece is an 8-page (a single sheet folded into fourths) promotional flyer that provides general information about the Institution and photographic illustrations. The second piece is an 8-page (a single sheet folded into fourths) informational brochure entitled Arts and Crafts at the Chautauqua Summer Schools, July 7-August 15, 1930. Laid into this piece is a single sheet addendum that lists two supplementary courses on stage craft and stage design, also offered as part of the arts and crafts classes. The third item is the complete list of summer school course offerings entitled Chautauqua Summer Schools, Fifty-Seventh Season 1930, July 7 - August 15. This brochure is 8 numbered pages in length; on the second page is series publication information: The Chautauqua Quarterly, Vo. 30, No. 2, April 1930. Courses offered fees charged, are listed in full. Title supplied by cataloger.
