One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Light, Shade & Shadow, New Edition, No. 17, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1884. This 20-page book is illustrated with 39 lithograph illustrations. The first 2 pages contain an outline of this book and various rules that apply to drawing with light, shade and shadow. On the last page are several notes and tips pertaining to lights, shade, and shadow. The pages in between are devoted to the actual drawing exercises. Some of these include: a treescape, a bucket, ornamental designs in relief, floral designs, and various outdoor scenes. Each exercise, one per page, is comprised of textual instruction, an image or images, and ample space for drawing. None of the exercises have been completed. The front cover is decorated with a simple but decorative frame around the text, with an Egyptian aten below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that. The book number is printed in both the upper left and right-hand corners. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for various "Popular Educational Series". ".50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

The cover title is Drawing and Tracing Book: Children at Play. This book is comprised of 8 plates of lithograph images. There are no sheets of tracing paper in this volume. The publisher's statement is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover: "Copyright 1898, McLoughlin Bros., New York." The back cover reads: "First Lessons in Drawing for Children", with a "No. 81" printed below it. Below these words is a floral decoration. The chromolithograph illustration on the front cover is of a young child, wearing a white cap and a white dress, holding a wooden spoon. The illustrations inside have been painted in with watercolors. "Marion Terry" is written in ms., in crayon, within the book.

Painting Plays for Rainy Days, and Easy Drawing Lessons

One painting book entitled Painting Plays for Rainy Days, And Easy Drawing Lessons, by J. H. Willard, published by Thompson & Thomas, Chicago, 1902. [Note: the imprint information for this record is taken from the title on the title page, which differs slightly from the cover.] The book is approximately 200 unnumbered pages in length. The front cover is a chromolithograph of three kittens playing with a paint box and brushes. The back cover is not illustrated. The illustrations inside the book are a combination of chromolithographs and outline images for painting. Some of the pictures are accompanied by rhymes or instructional text. The images seem to progress throughout the book from simple (drawing straight lines) to increasingly more complex (patterns and designs). These include scenes of children at play, patterns, designs, fruits and vegetables, animals and buildings. Also included are lessons in perspective and proportion. Many of the images have been colored with watercolor .

This 24-page painting book is comprised of lithograph images for painting and tracing and chromolithograph plates as samples. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the image on the front cover is of a boy, seated on the floor, in front of a painting he has created. The image on the back cover is of a child's drum toy. "Instructions for Little Artists" are printed on the inside of the front cover, and more information about color is printed on the inside of the back cover. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the inside of the front cover.

This book is 64 unnumbered pages in length, and provides step-by-step instructions for drawing horses and similar animals, such as mules and donkeys. All of the images are in black and white, and most pages contain at least some instructional text. The front cover is printed in brown on green paper; it features several images below the title from within the book. The imagery on the back cover is a duplicate of the front cover. "$1.00" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front and back covers. The inside of the front cover is blank; the inside of the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Pitman Art Series by Victor Perard." Laid inside the front cover are two newspaper clippings, dated 1951 and 1947 respectively.
