    One pamphlet, copyright 1857, entitled The Arts of Design: Especially as Related to Female Education, by J. A. Seiss, published by John Murphy & Co., Baltimore, Maryland. The subtitle reads: "An Address: deliberated in the Hall of the Maryland Institute, at the commencement of the Female Department of the School of Design, November 25th, 1856." The speaker encouraged women to enter the sphere of industrial arts and argued that "the 'Mechanic Arts' would improve both women's lot and the nation's economy." This 28-page pamphlet is unbound and not illustrated.

    One pamphlet, copyright 1881, entitled Circulars of Information of the Bureau of Education, No. 2-1881: The Relation of Education to Industry and Technical Training in American Schools, by Emerson Elbridge White, published by the Government Printing Office, Washington. This pamphlet is 22 numbered pages in length and is not illustrated. A table of contents is listed on p, 3, which is divided into two sections: Technical Training in American Schools and The Relation of Education to Industry. The embossed ownership stamp of the Essex Institute is stamped in the upper right-hand corner of the title page, and a Dewey decimal call number is written in ms. on the verso of the title page. An ink stamp of the Essex Institute, Salem, Mass., dated Aug. 29, 1881, is stamped in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

    One pamphlet, copyright 1879, entitled Circulars of Information of the Bureau of Education, No. 5-1879: American Education as Described by the French Commission to the International Exhibition of 1876, by Ferdinand Buisson, published by the Government Printing Office, Washington. This pamphlet is 38 pages in length and is not illustrated. It concerns the findings of a commission of French school officials and teachers who, in 1876, were sent to the United States to study educational methods in connection with the Centennial Exhibition of that year. This pamphlet is a summary of the commission's 702-page report. One of the commission's observations was the match between American values and the school system then in place. The embossed ownership stamp of the Essex Institute is in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. The ink stamp of the Essex Institute, dated March 8, 1880 is stamped in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

    Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Model and Object Drawing, Number One and Number Two, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1875. There are two copies of Number One; one is issued separately, the other bound together with Number Two. This "double issue" has an additional plain paper cover, with a Prang ownership stamp in the upper right-hand corner. On the inside of this additional cover is an ink stamp reading: "Royal B. Farnum, Director Art Education, State of Massachusetts", with "7/6/28" written in ms., in ink, below it. Each of the books is 20 pages in length, and contain numbered exercises. Each exercise is comprised of instructional text, a lithograph image for copying, and space for copying. The books have not been completed by previous owners. Some of the objects and models pictured in the books include: fruit and vegetables, drinking vessels of various kinds, seashells, chairs and geometrical solid forms. On the inside of each of the front covers are directions and instructions for using the books; on the inside of the back covers are illustrated names and definitions of the shapes and forms used throughout, and an advertisement for wooden drawing models. On the back covers are publisher's advertisements for other Smith books.

    One boxed set of wooden drawing models entitled New Forms and Solids for Object Teaching, manufactured by J.W. Schermerhorn & Co., New York, ca. 1870. The set is comprised of 44 forms, including a six-inch ruler, housed within a wooden box. The top lid of the box is removable, and there is a paper label mounted to its underside. The subtitle reads "Containing sixty-four pieces- there being forty-eight plane forms, fifteen solids, and a six-inch rule, among which are several new forms and solids, not included in any other set." Below the title is a numbered inventory of the forms. At the bottom of the label is an advertisement for J.W. Schermerhorn & Co.'s illustrated catalog of school material. Each of the forms is stamped with a number, which corresponds to the list.
