    One boxed collection of art reproductions, ca. 135 pieces, ranging in date from approximately 1920-1950. A significant portion of the represented paintings are American. The collection is comprised primarily of reproductions from Perry Pictures, The University Prints and Brown's Famous Pictures series of reproductions. A few postcards and newspaper clippings are also included in the group. The collection is housed within a paperboard box that has "Painting, American, few miscellaneous" written in ms., in pencil, on the lid. This collection was created by Mabel Spofford.     One set (incomplete) of art reproductions from Mentzer Bush & Co., Chicago and New York, published ca. 1925, which includes 5 cards representing 3 different paintings: "The Primitive Sculptor" by Couse; "Don Carlos on Horseback" by Velasquez, and "Galahad the Deliverer" by Abbey. There are two copies of the Couse painting; one copy of "Don Carlos", and two copies of the painting by Abbey. Each of these cards is printed in color, and contains the painting's title, artist, and collection or museum where the original resides, publisher's name and series title ("Great Masterpieces, Juniors"). The size of the cards varies; dimensions given are for the largest cards only. Title supplied by cataloger.

    Three price lists: one (and its duplicate) for art reproductions by the George P. Brown & Co., Beverly, Massachusetts, ca. 1924. They are entitled Brown's Famous Pictures for February, March and April and Brown's Famous Bible Pictures. The former was issued as a double-sided single sheet; the latter as a 6-page price list. All three items were laid in a Brown & Co. Catalog, HEH RB #603406. The two single-sheet price lists are illustrated with a single row of images across each side of the leaf. Below the title and images reproduction cards are listed for sale and grouped by categories, for example: Washington Pictures, Dickens Pictures, Lincoln Picture; Thanksgiving and Christmas Pictures. Brown's Famous Bible Pictures is illustrated with a single image on the first page. This publisher's price list also groups images by category: 'The Life of Christ'; 'Old Testament Pictures'; 'Christmas Pictures'; 'Easter Pictures'; 'Madonnas'; 'Miniature Bible Pictures'. An ink stamp indicated a price change. "May 1924" is written in ms., in pencil, on the first page of this list.

    One set of art reproductions of paintings and murals, published by University Prints, Newton, Massachusetts, printed not before 1915. This set includes 20 black and white reproductions. Below each is printed "University Prints, Boston", its number within the series, the title of the image, and artist. Some of the reproductions included are: "Picture writing" by Alexander; "The Printing Press" by Alexander; "Oak Tree" by Dupre; and "Alice" by Chase. The last 3 images are in a larger format, and were laid into HEH RB# 603435, all of which are by John W. Alexander. Title supplied by cataloger.

    One set (incomplete) of art reproductions published by the F.A. Owen Publishing Co., Dansville, New York, ca. 1925. This set includes 28 art reproduction cards and 4 pieces of ephemera, of which two are printed and two are ms. items. All of the reproductions are printed in color, and each card bears the title of the image, its artist, the number of that image within the F.A. Owen series, and the publisher's name. Some of the images included within this set are: "The Grand Canal" by Turner; "Autumn" by Mauve; "Madonna of the Chair" by Raphael; "Pilgrims Going to Worship" by Boughton, and "The Blue Boy" by Gainsborough. The quality of the reproductions varies; some are very clear and others are misaligned and blurred. Color and clarity varies within the duplicates as well. Title supplied by cataloger.

    One set of art reproductions from Art Extension Society. Each of these cards are from the "Artext Junior" series. There are 50 individual cards, many of which are duplicates. All of the cards are color, reproductions of works of art (primarily paintings) by artists from the United States and Europe. Printed below the image is the following information: name of series and number within; title; artist name and his or her birth and death dates; collection or museum name; country or educational 'school'; name of copyright holder, and card publisher. Some of the paintings (and artists) within this set are: "Galahad the Deliverer" by Edwin A. Abbey; "The Merchant Gisze" by Holbein; "Men Are Square" by Gerrit A. Beneker; "Dancing in a Ring" by Thoma; and "Consuelo" by Zuloaga. One use of these art reproduction cards was to introduce students to art of different cultures. The cards vary in size; they are roughly 3 x 5 in. each. Title supplied by cataloger.
