  One painting book entitled Art Studies for Little People: Landscapes, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The title page reads: Object Painting Book. This book is comprised of 8 leaves of chromolithograph plates: half in full color and half in dull green and black tones, intended for coloring by the student. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a house on a hillside, and cherry trees in bloom. "Copyright 1901 by McLoughlin Bros., New York" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover is blank, except for the Mother Goose logo in the lower right-hand corner, and "No. 83 1/2" printed below it. The inside of the front cover is illustrated with a palette containing 5 colors. "Directions for Using the Colors Printed on Other Half of Cover" are printed on the inside of the back cover. The title page, which bears a different title from that on the front cover ("Object Painting Book"), is decorated with line drawings. "Copyright 1902" is printed at the bottom of the title page. The images in the book are accompanied by rhymes and poems. None of the images have been colored in.

  American Drawing-Cards, First Series

  One set of drawing cards entitled American Drawing-Cards, First Series, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, 1873. This set includes 7 drawing cards, printed on both sides of each card. There are 14 numbered lessons, each with white-on-black lithograph illustrations. Also included is a set of directions: "Rules for the Guidance of Pupils using the American Drawing Cards." On the verso of this card is printed a 5-inch long rule measure. The lessons progress from simple horizontal, vertical and parallel lines (lesson no. 1) to moulding and interlacing forms (lesson no. 14, example 42). The cards are within a protective paper envelope. "Johnnie Fray[?]" is written in ms. at the top of the first card.

  Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors

  One art instruction book entitled Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors, by Marion Kemble, published by S.W. Tilton & Company, Boston, copyright 1882. Following a preface and an introduction, the book is informally divided into 4 sections, the first of which is entitled "Perspective". The remaining sections are: "Water colors," "Directions for coloring". The book is 66 pages in length, with an additional 13 unnumbered pages of testimonials and advertisements at the end. Two pages of publisher's advertisements for "Self-Instructive Lessons in drawing and painting in water-colors" precede the title page. Each section within the book is illustrated with line drawings; the section entitled "Directions for coloring" contains 7 full-page illustrations. Of these, 6 are numbered and are accompanied by textual instruction for painting. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Bulfinch's Mythology. The Age of Fable" edited by Rev. E.E. Hale. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "H.N.[?] Gey.[?]" is written in ms. in ink, in the upper right-hand corner, "V.B. Cummings" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

  Prang's Outline Pictures with Directions for Coloring

  One folder of images for painting entitled Prang's Outline Pictures with Directions for Coloring, Series 1, Children, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1888. Within the folder are 9 outline images for coloring; each is titled with the subject, generally characters from fairy tales. Printed in the lower left-hand corner of each leaf is "Copyright 1888 by L. Prang Co. Boston." Also within the folder are three printed sheets: one contains coloring instructions, one is an informational piece about the set, and the third is a manufacturer's advertisement for Prang's Christmas Cards.

  Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part I

  One set of drawing cards entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part I, by B.F. Nutting, printed by M. J. Whipple, Boston, Massachusetts, 1848. Originally the set came with 18 cards; only seventeen are present in this set--card 10 is missing. Each of the cards is single-sided, and bear a "1" in the upper left-hand corner and a different number in the upper right-hand corner. One card is unnumbered and appears to have been added at a later time. The cards are each described in an instructional pamphlet, eight pages in length, which is entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, In Four Parts: Eighteen Cards in Each, Presenting Carefully Drawn Examples, and Accompanied by Directions Illustrating the First Principles of Drawing; for the Use of Schools and Families. The pamphlet also features instructions in basic drawing techniques. On the upper right-hand corner of the pamphlet's cover there is a handwritten note, in pencil, which reads "17 (of 18) cards / #10 Lacking/ 35-/ c.f. xix of Drepperd Amer. Draw. [?] NY 1946." The cards and the pamphlet were originally enclosed in an envelope with a green-criss-cross design.

  One set of drawing cards entitled Brown’s School Series—The Young Designer Drawing Cards: 24 different designs for crayon work, suitable for Infants and Standard 1., Packet No. 1, manufactured by A. Brown & Sons, Ltd., London, Hull and York, ca. 1900-1905. There are 24 numbered drawing cards (card number 13 is lacking) within a paperboard slipcase. Each of the drawing cards are printed on both sides; the chromolithography of the front side of each was meant to imitate the look of a crayon drawing, and the back side of each is printed in outline for coloring by the child. Most of the cards contain 2 or 3 images per card, only a few cards contain a single image. The background of each card is printed in a light blue grid. The slipcase bears 2 large printed paper labels: one features the series title and advertisements for "Browns' Young Designer Drawing Book, No. 1" and "Browns' Young Artist's No. 250 Crayons"; the other is an outline of the Browns' Young Artist's Series for Infants and Standard 1, Packets A-6 lists and other items offered for sale.
