One set of drawing cards, in a blue and white patterned-paper envelope entitled Coe’s New Drawing Cards for Schools, No. 5, printed by D. Appleton & Co., New York, ca. 1860-1880. The envelope label also includes the note "Instructions for the Series will be found with No. 1" and the statement "(Copyright Secured.)". The 17 drawing cards depict landscapes, architecture and animals. Each of the cards have a "No. 6" in the upper left hand corner, and sometimes a number in the upper right hand corner.

Easy Drawing Lessons for Blackboard or Slate

One set of drawing cards entitled Easy Drawing Lessons for Blackboard or Slate, by E. Croasdale, printed by J.M. Stoddart & Co., Philadelphia, 1879. The label identifies E. Croasdale as the "Principal, Philadelphia School of Design for Women." The set is comprised of 36 cards, each containing white images against a black background. Intended for copying, the lessons begin with simple lines and progress to more complex forms. Each card is numbered in the upper left-hand corner and contains two images. For example, card 36 shows a young man holding a baseball bat on the left-hand side and on the right-hand side a cricket bat, ball and wickets. Printed on one side of the wrapper is: "Edwards & Docker, Box Makers, 418 Market St., Philadelphia." Original price for the cards, 25 cents.

The Teachers' Companion to the American Drawing-Slates: No. 1.--Free-Hand Drawing, Elementary and Advanced

One book entitled The Teachers' Companion to the American Drawing-Slates: No. 1.--Free-Hand Drawing, Elementary and Advanced, by Walter Smith, published by Noyes, Holmes, and Company, Boston, 1872. On the verso of the title page is printed: "Riverside, Cambridge: Electrotyped and Printed by H.O. Houghton and Company." This booklet is 52 numbered pages in length, and features white-on-black drawing card reproductions as illustrations. Following an 8-page introduction, the book is divided into two sections, Free-hand Drawing, parts 1 and 2. Both sections include use of straight and curved lines. The insides of the front and back covers, as well as the back cover, are blank. "E.A.W." (previous owner) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. "25-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

One set of drawing cards, untitled, ca. 1850. There are 48 drawing cards in this set, each numbered in the upper-right hand corner, 5 to 32, followed by 66, then 68-76. The designs, largely geometric, are progressively more complex as the numbers go higher. Many of the cards have been copied in pencil, next to the original printed design (one per card). They are untitled, and contain no other form of identification. Title supplied by cataloger.

Knudsen's Method of Drawing Instruction For Schools

One set of drawing cards and instructional booklet, 15 pp., entitled Knudsen's Method of Drawing Instruction For Schools, published by C.W. Knudsen, New York, 1862. The subtitle for the booklet further explains the method as "based on the suppositions that the instruction is introduced for the following purposes: to discipline the Mind, to cultivate Good Taste, and to serve as an aid in the future Transactions of Life; that it is commenced with children of from six to nine years of age, and pursued for five years, twice a week, of one hour, in classes of twenty or more pupils; that the first three or four years' instruction is given by the ordinary teacher; and the last years' instruction by a professional Drawing-Master." The 15 page booklet provides a lesson plan for teaching children drawing skills. Minor corrections have been made to the text in the margins (see tp, p.13). How the cards are connected to the booklet is unclear. The 43 cards are numbered in the upper left-hand corner, with a run of cards 1-39, and then 54-57. On the first card in the upper right-hand corner is the penciled notation "1-34" and "54-57". The cards have other numbers, including what appear to be coordinates and/or ratios.

Bartholomew's Primary School Drawing Cards, No. 1

One set of drawing cards entitled Bartholomew's Primary School Drawing Cards, No. 1, by W. N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York and Chicago, 1874. This set is comprised of 10 double-sided lithograph cards, principally containing line drawing lessons on each side, totaling 20 lessons. The exercises in this series are listed on the envelope wrapper, below the title: "SET No. 1 - Simple exercises in placing points, drawing lines, plane figures, familiar objects and ornamental forms; also lessons in Printing and Writing." Sets 2 and 3 are also described. Each lesson is printed on a black background, with the image or letter to be copied in white. These drawing cards were designed to be used in conjunction with a drawing slate; the card would be placed in the card holder at one end of the slate, and the image copied onto the slate. The penmanship lessons on Card 10 are labeled "Payson, Dunton & Scribner's Penmanship." On the back side of the envelope is a publisher's advertisement for "Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing" books. The dimensions provided are for the envelope.
