  Coe’s New Drawing Lessons, No. IV, Drawing for Schools

  One set of drawing cards entitled Coe’s New Drawing Lessons, No. IV, Drawing for Schools, by Benjamin H. Coe, printed by D. Appleton & Co., New York, 1858. The envelope label also includes the subtitle "A Method by which all the M[emb]ers of a Large Class are taught to Draw at [once] with Neatness, Uniformity, and Accuracy." Also on the label, in pencil, is the note "This not in Drepperd". The cards are divided into four groups as listed on the label: No. 1. Perpendicular and Horizontal Lines; No. 2. Oblique and Curved Lines; No. 3. Curved Lines and Introduction to Landscape; and No. 4. Studies in Landscape. There are 47 drawing cards--all single-sided-- depicting landscapes and simple architectural outlines. Some of the cards have numbers either in the upper left-hand or the upper-right hand corners: other cards have no numbers, merely the image. It is highly probable that the cards are an amalgam of several different sets.

  Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part I

  One set of drawing cards entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part I, by B.F. Nutting, printed by M. J. Whipple, Boston, Massachusetts, 1848. Originally the set came with 18 cards; only seventeen are present in this set--card 10 is missing. Each of the cards is single-sided, and bear a "1" in the upper left-hand corner and a different number in the upper right-hand corner. One card is unnumbered and appears to have been added at a later time. The cards are each described in an instructional pamphlet, eight pages in length, which is entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, In Four Parts: Eighteen Cards in Each, Presenting Carefully Drawn Examples, and Accompanied by Directions Illustrating the First Principles of Drawing; for the Use of Schools and Families. The pamphlet also features instructions in basic drawing techniques. On the upper right-hand corner of the pamphlet's cover there is a handwritten note, in pencil, which reads "17 (of 18) cards / #10 Lacking/ 35-/ c.f. xix of Drepperd Amer. Draw. [?] NY 1946." The cards and the pamphlet were originally enclosed in an envelope with a green-criss-cross design.

  Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part VI

  One set of drawing cards entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part VI, by B. F. Nutting, printed by John Jewett & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, 1850. Originally the set came with 18 cards, however there are only sixteen present--Cards 17 and 18 are missing. Each of the cards is single-sided and have a "IIII" in the upper left-hand corner and a different number in the upper right-hand corner. The cards are each numbered and described in the instructions printed on the sleeve. The number in the instructions corresponds to the number in the card's upper right-hand corner. "#135 $25.00" is written in ms. on the sleeve.

  One set of drawing cards entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, Part I, by B.F. Nutting, printed by M. J. Whipple, Boston, Massachusetts, 1848. The set of eighteen cards is complete. Each is described in an eight page instructional pamphlet included with the cards, entitled Initiatory Drawing Cards, In Four Parts, with the subtitle Eighteen Cards in Each, Presenting Carefully Drawn Examples, and Accompanied by Directions Illustrating the First Principles of Drawing; for the Use of Schools and Families. The pamphlet describes each of the cards in the set, the number in the pamphlet corresponds to the card's number in the upper right-hand corner. Instructions are given in basic drawing techniques. The original envelope in which the cards and pamphlet were enclosed is also included. On the inside of the envelope, in pencil, is the following note: "See Dreppard for long [note?] p.16/ Part I complete/ Parts II (12) & IV (11) incomplete/ Lot as is/ Rare (NYPL has Part II only.)/ 40-." Written in ms., in the upper right-hand corner of the pamphlet's cover, is "40-." (price).

  Set of drawing cards circa 1850

  One set of drawing cards, untitled, ca. 1850. There are 48 drawing cards in this set, each numbered in the upper-right hand corner, 5 to 32, followed by 66, then 68-76. The designs, largely geometric, are progressively more complex as the numbers go higher. Many of the cards have been copied in pencil, next to the original printed design (one per card). They are untitled, and contain no other form of identification. Title supplied by cataloger.

  Knudsen's Method of Drawing Instruction For Schools

  One envelope of drawing cards and instructional booklet, 12 pp., entitled Knudsen's Method of Drawing Instruction For Schools: Third Year's Drawing Instruction, Containing Forty Progressive Patterns For Practical Shading, published by C.W. Knudsen, New York, 1864. The subtitle for the booklet further explains that this set is "to be used by the ordinary teacher twice a week." The booklet provides a lesson plan for use of the cards, describing how each card should be used. Of the original forty cards, only one is missing, No. 40. Most are signed "CWK" (Charles W. Knudsen?)in the lower right-hand corner. Booklet has indecipherable penciled inscription on the first page.
