There are several different images per page, some of which are landscapes and seascapes. Title and publication information on the front cover are within a simple frame ornamented by acorns. The insides of the front and back covers are blank, and the back cover is a publisher's advertisement from C.P. Huestis.   One art instruction book entitled The Columbian Drawing Book, designed for Schools and Private Instruction, by William B. Shattuck, No. 2, published by Bradley & Anthony, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1849. Additional publishers listed on the title page are: New York, Cady & Burgess; Boston: James Monroe & Co. The book consists of 6 pages of text, followed by 8 numbered lithographs, printed by Otto Oncken, Cincinnati [Ohio]. The black and white images are primarily of houses, the first two are schematic in nature. On the back cover is a publisher's announcement for the Columbian Drawing Book and the Columbian Drawing Cards. Recommendations for use of this book are found on the inside of the front cover; the inside of the back cover is an advertisement for Bradley & Anthony, Publishers, Booksellers and Stationers.

  One booklet entitled Drawing in Public Schools by the use of The Smith Books Condemned.... The Merits of the Bartholomew Books Presented, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York and Chicago, 1874. This book is 56 pages in length, and contains an additional 24-page addendum which is entitled: "Osgood's Circular, misrepresenting Mr. Bartholomew and his books, answered." The primary booklet is a point-by-point rebuttal of the Smith drawing system. It is illustrated with "bad" examples of drawing used by the Smith system, and "good" examples as found in the Bartholomew system. The Osgood's Circular at the end seems to be a continuation of the acclaimed inferiority and general "wrong-ness" of the Smith system of teaching drawing.

  Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Light, Shade & Shadow, New Edition, No. 17

  One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Light, Shade & Shadow, New Edition, No. 17, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1884. This 20-page book is illustrated with 39 lithograph illustrations. The first 2 pages contain an outline of this book and various rules that apply to drawing with light, shade and shadow. On the last page are several notes and tips pertaining to lights, shade, and shadow. The pages in between are devoted to the actual drawing exercises. Some of these include: a treescape, a bucket, ornamental designs in relief, floral designs, and various outdoor scenes. Each exercise, one per page, is comprised of textual instruction, an image or images, and ample space for drawing. None of the exercises have been completed. The front cover is decorated with a simple but decorative frame around the text, with an Egyptian aten below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that. The book number is printed in both the upper left and right-hand corners. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for various "Popular Educational Series". ".50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

A Critical Review of the Prang Course in Form-Study and Drawing, by Arnold Dodel, with an introduction by Louis Prang, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, ca. 1890. This pamphlet is 36 numbered pages in length, and is not illustrated. The 9-page introduction is signed by Louis Prang, and is dated March 1, 1890. "University Press: John Wilson and Son, Cambridge" is printed on the verso of the title page.

  Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, No. 3 and No. 4

  Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, No. 3 and No. 4, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Company, New York and Chicago, 1874. This book is 16 pages in length and contains unnumbered exercises which range from one to three per page. The focus is on outline drawing: "the subjects selected as examples for practice are lines, angles, plane geometrical figures, ornamental forms, and outlines of familiar objects." Some of the exercises include: drinking goblets, a call bell, a candlestick holder and floral and leafy designs and patterns. All of the exercises have been completed by a previous owner. A decorative, horizontally-oriented frame surrounds the title on the front cover: patterns and ornamental designs fill the left-hand panel and a small, square image of an artist's easel and palette is in the upper right-hand corner of the frame. In the two bottom corners of the frame are places for the student to fill in his or her name and school and grade. On the inside of the front cover is an explanation of the Industrial Series itself, as well as some recommendations for materials to be used with this system. Three testimonials for the Bartholomew System from New York newspapers appear on the inside of the back cover. At the end of the testimonials is a list of the books that comprise the Bartholomew National System of Drawing. On the back cover of each is a publisher's advertisement for "Magill's French Series" of language books. Prior ownership: "V.B White" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. "Viola B. White" is written in ms. in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover in the space labeled "Name"; "Haigh School" is written in ms. in the space labeled "School".
