    This collection consists of approximately 1,375 printed items that form part of the John Haskell Kemble maritime collection compiled by American maritime historian John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990). The collection dates from approximately 1720 to 1990 and contains prints, ephemera, maps, charts, calendars, objects, and photographs related to maritime and land-based travel, often from Kemble's own travels. The collection is divided into five series: prints; ephemera; maps, charts, and calendars; objects; and photographs. A large portion of this collection remains unprocessed.

    The sheet provides the displacement scale for the Colon, as well as outline drawings of the "Stem and Forward Piece of Keel", the "Midship Section" and "Stern Post" of the vessel. "Steam Ship Colon"--title at top of drawing. "Built by the Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works, Chester, PA, No. 123"--text in drawing, center, upper left. "Built for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company of New York City April 18th 1873"--text in drawing, center, upper right. "Principal Dimensions / Length at 12 feet water line 282 feet 6 inches / Length overall 300 feet / Depth from Base line to Gunwale 30 ft. 6 " / Beam moulded 40 feet"--text in drawing, center, lower left. "6-9-'93"--date, in ms, bottom right of image. "Case No. 72BS Sheet No. 4540S"--lower right corner, stamped on original; numbers, in ms., have been crossed out; stamp and the case number are the similar to the one found on ephKMSP 006, indicating the origin of the drawing is Union Iron Works Co., San Francisco. "1371-40616"--numbers above the original case and sheet numbers. "Colon"--in ms., in pencil, lower right corner. "2-1 Don"--on verso, in ms., in red pencil. Unknown as to when the copy was made. Focus of item: Colon.
