Printed below the wreath is: Born Feby. 12 1809. / Ours the Cross / His the Crown / Assassinated April 14 1865. One the left of the obelisk is a man in civilian dress, on the right a soldier, hands in prayer while leaning on a musket. At the base of the monument, Columbia stands in a red and blue dress with her hand over her face while weeping, broken shackles hanging on either side.
