There are Union soldiers, under the command of Captain Edmund C. Bainbridge, standing and sitting near the artillery. There are circular bales of cotton on the left, one of which has broken open.

A view behind the lines of the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery in Fort Hudson, Louisiana. An area has been cleared out of the forest, leaving an open space which has at least one gun in the center, surrounded by standing Union soldiers under the command of either Captain Clayton Cox (1842-1866) or Captain Chambers Cox (1840-1866). The men and artillery are standing behind an earthwork reinforced with circular bales of cotton. It is cotton from these bales that is littering the ground, looking like snow.

Monument honoring the 1st New York Artillery, Battery D

Image of the monument to Battery D of the 1st New York Light Artillery, Artillery Brigade, Third Corps. Monument consists of a large block finished on the front, rough hewn on the sides. On the front is a wheel, behind which are crossed ramrods, and on either side cannon. The photograph has been affixed to a card with the photographer's signature and "Gettysburg, Pa." printed in gold lettering at the bottom.
