    Diaries and family history of Elias Smith [microform] : 1836-1888

    Microfilm of a family history and twelve diary volumes kept by Elias Smith between 1836 and his death in 1888. The reel opens with a will written by Smith's grandfather Asael Smith for his wife and children (1799). That is followed by a volume of family history and genealogy kept by Elias Smith. The first diary volume, dated 1836, was kept while Smith was traveling to Kirtland, Ohio. The 1837 volume was kept while Smith was living at Kirtland; the 1838-1839 volume describes his life in Far West, Missouri; the 1843-1851 volume commences when Smith left Nashville, Iowa, for a postal job in Illinois, and also includes commentary on anti-Mormon sentiment; and the 1851-1854 diary covers his overland journey to Utah and work as a probate judge in Salt Lake City. The remaining seven diaries detail Smith's life in Utah from 1859-1888, focusing on his court and agricultural work. The manuscripts are on two microfilm reels as follows: Reel 1 - Asael Smith letter, family history and genealogy, and diaries dated 1836-1872; Reel 2 - continuation of 1836-1872 diary through 1874, and diaries dated 1874-1888.

    Microfilm of six diaries kept by William Farrer from 1849-1854. The first volume, dated 1849, recalls Farrer's travels from Utah to California with Charles Coulson Rich. The 1850-1851 diary begins when Farrer was preparing to depart California for Hawaii, and recounts his sea voyage and missionary work through 1851. The remaining four diaries were kept while Farrer was serving on his Hawaiian mission, and are dated 1851-1852, 1852-1853, 1853, and 1854. Also included on the reel is "A Short Account of My Mission to the Sandwich Islands," sent by Farrer to "Pres. Clawson and Tibbetts" in 1855, and a brief excerpt on Farrer from the Deseret News, dated 1897 and written by Ramona Farrer Cottam.

    Microfilm of assorted diaries, account books, and notes kept by James Stephen Brown. The microfilm includes fragments of diaries dated Ogden City 1860, Calhoun, Iowa, 1849, and Salt Lake 1859; a diary identified as Nottingham, England, which opens in 1857, when Brown delayed his mission work to participate in the Utah War, and traces his travels through Utah, his overland journey to New York, and his mission in England from 1860-1861; a second diary covering Brown's mission in England; an 1872 diary tracing his mission work in New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts; an 1875-1876 diary describing his travels through Utah and mission to Navajos in Arizona; assorted family notes dated 1900; a typescript of Brown's 1875-1876 Navajo diary; an 1875-1876 Utah diary; a diary dated 1892 tracing a mission to the Society Islands; an account book dated 1863-1866; and a diary dated 1870, which mainly contains account notes from 1866-1870.

    Microfilm of the diaries of Thomas Judd, covering the years 1876-1878 and 1906-1908. The first two diaries, dated 1876-1877 and 1877-1878, cover Judd's mission to Britain. The 1906 diary covers Judd's activities in La Verkin, his business trips around Washington County, and a trip to Las Vegas and California, including Los Angeles, Pasadena, several beaches, and Santa Catalina Island (where he took a glass bottom boat ride). The 1907 diary describes a second trip to California, including San Francisco, as well as Utah business activities, and the 1908 diary traces Judd's sea voyage from New York to Los Angeles. Portions of the diary are very faint and may be partially illegible.

Reel one contains the diaries dated 1881-1891, reel two contains the diaries dated 1892-1902, and reel three contains the diaries dated 1903-1906, as well as assorted letters and notes dated 1857-1963.
