  Typescript of Bean's 1855-1856 diary, which details interactions between Mormon missionaries at Las Vegas, New Mexico, and local Indians, including baptisms, trade, and some hostilities. Included are Bean's account of a journey from Las Vegas to California across the Mojave in October-November 1855 (which included stops in San Bernardino, Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Mission, and El Monte) and of travels between Las Vegas and the "Colorado Muddy" in 1856. Bean also references an encounter with the "murderers" of J.W. Gunnison, an Army captain killed in an Indian massacre in 1853; remarks on the camp visit of explorers Jules Remy and Julius Lucius Brenchley, who published "A Journey to Great Salt Lake City" in 1861; mentions his attendance of a performance of J.H. Martineau's "Missouri Persecutions;" and describes various interactions with Las Vegas Mission President William Bringhurst. The diary concludes with a series of prayers/poems dedicated to "The Wives and Families of the L.V. Missionaries," "The Pioneers of '47," and "Pres. B. Young and His Counselors," as well as the minutes of a meeting held "under the Bowery" at Las Vegas on June 24, 1856 and minutes of a celebration of the Fourth of July at Las Vegas, and a song entitled, "I Got Drunk Again."

  Diary of Ethan Pettit [microform] : 1855-1878

  Microfilm of the diary of Ethan Pettit, kept from 1855-1878. The volume opens when Pettit was serving on his Indian mission to the Elk Mountains in Colorado. The remainder of the volume from 1856-1881 focuses on Pettit's life in Utah, and primarily recounts farm, livestock, and agricultural work.

  Diaries of Thomas Judd [microform] : 1876-1908

  Microfilm of the diaries of Thomas Judd, covering the years 1876-1878 and 1906-1908. The first two diaries, dated 1876-1877 and 1877-1878, cover Judd's mission to Britain. The 1906 diary covers Judd's activities in La Verkin, his business trips around Washington County, and a trip to Las Vegas and California, including Los Angeles, Pasadena, several beaches, and Santa Catalina Island (where he took a glass bottom boat ride). The 1907 diary describes a second trip to California, including San Francisco, as well as Utah business activities, and the 1908 diary traces Judd's sea voyage from New York to Los Angeles. Portions of the diary are very faint and may be partially illegible.

  Diaries of John E. Bennion [microform] : 1855-1877

  Microfilm containing five diary volumes kept by John Bennion between 1855 and 1877. The diaries include entries on Bennion's daily activities in Utah, including shearing sheep, agriculture, attending meetings, and visiting acquaintances. The first diary volume covers 1855-1857; the second 1858-1862; the third 1862-1873; the fourth 1870-1873 (kept beginning when Bennion was at Panaca, Utah, which is now in Nevada); and the fifth 1873-1877.

  Diary and autobiography of George Lake [microform] : c.1870-1938

  Microfilm of the diary and autobiography of George Lake, beginning with diary entries of his mission trip to England from October 1870 to August 1871. Lake appears to have been living at Workington in Cumberland, although he frequently traveled to Newcastle and surrounding areas. The mission entries focus on Lake's attendance of Church conferences and his interactions with local Mormons, including notes on births, marriages, and deaths. The remainder of the volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, and recalls Lake's move to Oxford in Round Valley, Utah, following his return from England in 1871; his flight to avoid polygamy charges in 1874; his being placed in charge of the northern division of Arizona missionaries in 1876, including a list of names of fellow missionaries; and his involvement in creating the United Order at Yavapai, Arizona, in 1877. The volume includes the text of the "last address by Gen. Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Nauvoo Legion in June 1844," followed by a brief summary of Lake's life in 1879. The final pages, in another hand, include a family record with genealogy up through about 1938 and the texts of patriarchal blessings on the Lake family in 1913.

  Diary of George Laub, volume one [microform]: c.1845-1857

  Microfilm of George Laub's diary covering approximately 1845-1857, and identified as Volume 1. The volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, many of which appear to have been copied from an earlier source. The first entry is dated January 1, 1845, but entries before about 1855 are not always in chronological order. The early portion of the volume consists of an autobiography recounting Laub's difficult childhood following the death of his father, his arrival in Nauvoo in 1843, the death of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the expulsion of the Mormons from Nauvoo, Laub's adoption by John D. Lee, and his marriage to Mary Jane Meginness(who converted to Mormonism before their wedding); a combination of diary entries and autobiographical notes cover his moves between Illinois and Iowa from 1846-1847, persecution and mob violence faced by the Mormons in Illinois, his life in Missouri from 1848-1852, and his overland travels to Utah in 1852. The diary entries from 1855 focus on Laub's laboring on mills and his church activities in and around Salt Lake City through 1857. The volume also contains lists of births and deaths, as well as extensive theological notes, addresses, and prophecies copied from Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Heber Kimball, and Brigham Young.
