Diary of Jesse Bigler Martin [microform]: 1857

Description: Microfilm of Jesse Bigler Martin's 1857 diary, kept while he was leading his own company overland to Utah following a mission to England. The diary begins on July 30, when Martin was near Scott's Bluffs, Nebraska. It includes entries on distances traveled, members of his company, and notes on supplies. Martin arrived back in Salt Lake City on September 13, and brief diary entries recount his attention to home matters, attendance of a prayer circle, and his departure from the city on November 10 with his "brethren" to "stop the soldiers from coming into the city." He fell ill and returned to Salt Lake City two weeks later. The final entry recounts his marriage to Ann Clark in December. Additional notes in the diary include a list of Martin's plural wives and children, genealogy, a list of debts and credits, lyrics for the Missionaries Hand Card Song, the Crystal Spring, and the Carrier Dove, and a newspaper obituary for Ann Clark Martin.

Microfilm of a typescript of Thomas S. Terry's diary, kept from 1857-1860 while he was leading a company of Mormons across the plains to Utah following his eastern states mission (it is identified as "Book 4." Terry writes of the death of Parley P. Pratt, of his company's progression across the plains, of meeting Jesse B. Martin's company, of moving the Springville upon his return to Utah, and of the family's move back to Cottonwood in July 1858. The rest of the diary describes Terry's daily life in Utah.

Autobiography and diary of Thomas Sirls Terry [microform]: 1856-1859

Microfilm of two volumes by Thomas S. Terry, one containing an autobiography of his life to 1856 and one containing a journal kept from 1857-1859. The autobiography describes of Terry's teenage years spent working in cotton and calico mills, his conversion to Mormonism and decision to quit his printing job and leave home in 1845, of his odd jobs throughout the mid-Atlantic, and of finally joining the Mormons in Missouri in 1847. Terry also writes of his arrival in Salt Lake City, his marriage to Mary Ann Pulsipher in 1849 (he would later marry her sister Eliza Jane), of the family's move to Little Cottonwood, of trouble with Chief Walkara's tribe, and of his departure for a mission to the eastern states in 1856. The volume also contains family blessings from 1858 and 1875, as well as genealogy of both the Terry and Pulsipher families. The second volume is a diary Terry kept while leading a company of Mormons across the plains to Utah following his eastern states mission (it is identified as "Book Number 4" and covers June 1857-December 1859). Terry writes of the death of Parley P. Pratt, of his company's progression across the plains, of meeting Jesse B. Martin's company, of moving the Springville upon his return to Utah, and of the family's move back to Cottonwood in July 1858. The rest of the diary describes Terry's daily life in Utah.

Autobiography and diary of William McIntosh [microform]: c.1857-1889

Microfilm of the autobiography and diary of William McIntosh. The early part of the volume focuses on McIntosh's early years in the United States and his emigration to Utah. Many of the entries focus on his involvement in preparations for the Utah War from 1857-1858. He also describes the presence of soldiers in Rush Valley and seeing Indians in army uniforms while traveling around Pond Town (now Salem, Utah) in 1858. The early diary entries end in 1866, and the latter part of the volume resumes with entries from 1884-1898. McIntosh includes anecdotes about his family, his life in Mt. Pleasant and surrounding areas, his work on ditches and other forms of irrigation, water rights in southern Utah, and being advised by a bishop not to vote against Utah statehood. Toward the end of the volume is the transcribed text of "A Fatal Accident at St. Johns," which recalls the death of John McIntosh (probably William McIntosh's son) after he was crushed by wagon wheels in 1889.

Diaries of Phillip Margetts [microform] : 1857-1860 1891

Microfilm of diaries and notes kept by Phillip Margetts during his missions to England (1857-1861; 1891) and South Africa (1862). The first volume is a notebook kept during his 1857-1859 mission to England, and much of it consists of pages of poems, notes (including a list of cities visited), accounts, and drafts of letters. A second 1891 diary briefly recounts a second mission to England. It is followed by a detailed autobiography and diary of the 1857-1858 mission to England and a final volume of Margett's 1861 mission to England, which also includes a diary kept while he was sailing on the Sidney in 1862 to South Africa, where he spent time in Mowbray, Port Elizabeth, and Oliphants Hoek.

Diary of George Laub, volume one [microform]: c.1845-1857

Microfilm of George Laub's diary covering approximately 1845-1857, and identified as Volume 1. The volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, many of which appear to have been copied from an earlier source. The first entry is dated January 1, 1845, but entries before about 1855 are not always in chronological order. The early portion of the volume consists of an autobiography recounting Laub's difficult childhood following the death of his father, his arrival in Nauvoo in 1843, the death of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the expulsion of the Mormons from Nauvoo, Laub's adoption by John D. Lee, and his marriage to Mary Jane Meginness(who converted to Mormonism before their wedding); a combination of diary entries and autobiographical notes cover his moves between Illinois and Iowa from 1846-1847, persecution and mob violence faced by the Mormons in Illinois, his life in Missouri from 1848-1852, and his overland travels to Utah in 1852. The diary entries from 1855 focus on Laub's laboring on mills and his church activities in and around Salt Lake City through 1857. The volume also contains lists of births and deaths, as well as extensive theological notes, addresses, and prophecies copied from Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Heber Kimball, and Brigham Young.

Microfilm of a diary of Christopher Jones Arthur, kept in 1884. Arthur was living near Salt Lake City and writes of his daily activities, his attendance of meetings, visiting acquaintances, the weather and his health, news of the British and Welsh mentions, and going to a circus.
