  Diaries of Joseph Coulson Rich [microform] : 1860-1869

  Microfilm of five diary volumes kept by Joseph C. Rich between 1860 and 1869. The first diary, dated 1860-1861, begins in Utah and follows Rich's overland travels to New York, his voyage to England, and his experiences during his British mission, primarily in the area around Nottingham. The second diary, dated 1861-1862, was also kept at Nottingham. Between the second and third diaries is a typed essay entitled "Joseph C. Rich in Memoriam" by S.A. Kenner. The third and fourth diaries were also kept in England in 1862, and the third volume also includes miscellaneous notes and poems primarily related to American Indians, as well as some receipts. The final diary volume was begun in 1869 when Rich was departing Uintah with an emigrant train to "perform a mission to our relatives and friends in the United States." It follows his rail travels through Omaha, Chicago, and Nauvoo, and ends while he was at Louisville.

  Microfilm of photographs, letters, and typed manuscripts primarily related to Joseph Coulson Rich and Ann Eliza Hunter Rich. The first 48 frames of the microfilm include various photographs of Rich family members. The correspondence, consisting of 90 pieces, includes a letter from Charles C. Rich to his sons (1854); 19 letters from Edward Hunter to Joseph and Ann Eliza Rich dated 1872-1883; 5 letters from Sarah D. Pea Rich to Joseph C. Rich and James Brown dated 1859-1861; 6 letters from Ann Hunter to dear sister (1851), Hannah Pauley (1854), Annabell Cowperthuik (1857), and Edward Hunter (1848); 50 letters from Joseph C. Rich to his sister Sarah Jane Rich (1855-1868), mother Sarah D. Pea Rich (1855-1887), father Charles Coulson Rich (1861-1870), grandfather Joseph Rich (1862), the President of the Derby Conference 1862), wife Ann Eliza Rich (1868-1885), father-in-law Edward Hunter (1869-1872), daughter Susanna L. Rich (1884-1893), and son Eddie C. Rich (1884); and one letter from Edmund Hood to Joseph C. Rich (1872). The correspondence was written in Utah, San Bernardino, Kentucky, New York, Illinois, Idaho (including while Rich was working at the Crawford and Rich law firm), and during Joseph Rich's mission to England. The rest of the film consists of various typescripts, including Paris, Idaho, by Standley H. Rich; Joe Rich's Account of Launching His Steamer on the Bear Lake; Pioneer Joseph Rich, 1786-1866 by Zule R.   Autobiography of Sarah D. Pea Rich [microform] : 1893

  Microfilm of a typescript of Sarah D. Pea Rich's autobiography, copied at the Church Historian's Office by A.M. Rich in 1933. Includes a brief forward by Sarah Rich dated 1885 (the autobiography was finished in 1893). It begins with stories about Sarah's family history and her childhood in Illinois and Tennessee, and goes on to describe her family's conversion to Mormonism in 1835, of her first meeting with Charles C. Rich, experiences during her early years of marriage, mob violence against Mormons in Missouri, living in Nauvoo, her positive reminiscences on polygamy, the family's 1847 travels to Iowa, living in Mount Pisgah, traveling overland to Utah, and life in Utah during her husband's seven year mission to California. Also includes some genealogy.

  Essays on pioneer life in Arizona [microform] : approximately 1930

  Microfilm of a variety of essays and notes by Evans Coleman, primarily recalling pioneer life in Arizona. The essays and notes include "No.7 Pioneer Reunion, August 1930" (recalling "big reunion of the Apache County pioneer," which Coleman attended with W.W. Pace and others), "1880 Springerville (Round Valley) Horse Racing," "A Pioneer Incident II, 1884" (story about "Old Mase" Slaughter), "Along in the '90s: Do You Remember the Thrills of Yesterday?", "The Apache County Treasury Robbery," "Alpine School House" (photograph and summary), "The Firsts in Bush Valley," "Thatcher, Arizona, in 1899," "Incidents in Thatcher in 1899," and miscellaneous notes and photographs. The reel also contains the diary of Coleman's father Prime Thornton Coleman, recalling his daily life in Upper Kanab, Utah, in 1879.

  Remembrances in the life of Charles Edmund Richardson [microform]: approximately 1934

  Microfilm of a typescript autobiography of Charles Edmund Richardson, edited and typed in approximately 1934. It opens with recollections of the early life of Richardson's mother Mary Ann Darrow Richardson (1818-1872), including her conversion to Mormonism while stuck in Salt Lake City on the way to Oregon (despite her early fears of "dreadful Mormons"). He also writes briefly of his father, Edmund Richardson (1816-1874). The autobiography then recalls Richardson's early life in Manti and Springville, and includes many anecdotes of his childhood and school days as well as family life. It also covers his work at the Shoebridge Mill and in the mining camps, his learning Spanish at St. John for missionary work while teaching school, traveling along the Rio Grande, studying law and moving to Mexico, the "depredations of Texas outlaws" around Canyon Creek, Indian attacks near Wilford, and many anecdotes about life in Mexico. Portions of the document were written by Richardson's wife Sarah Louisa Adams ("Sadie") and his brother Sullivan Calvin "Sullie" Richardson. The second portion of the microfilm includes an autobiography of Sullie Richardson (1861-1940). Sullie also includes a variety of childhood anecdotes, including his school experiences, his father's work in the Nevada mines, and other family stories. He also describes traveling through Provo Canyon, encounters with Indians near Prescott, confrontations at Fort Defiance, working on the railroad near Rio Puerco, working for the water service in Brigham City, moving to Mexico and meeting President Diaz, teaching school, working on the Arizona Eastern Railroad, and moving to Thatcher, Arizona.

  Microfilm of the diaries of Joseph H. Richards, covering the years 1876, 1881, 1886, and 1892-1893. All of the Utah and Arizona diaries consist of brief entries recalling Richards's daily life. The 1876 volume records his life in Utah and his call to colonize Arizona; the 1881 volume records his life in the St. Joseph United Order; the 1886 diary recalls his travels from Arizona to Utah and California; and the 1892-1893 diary recounts in more detail his mission to England and Scotland, and also includes a brief autobiography.
