Description: Microfilm of a typescript autobiography of Charles Edmund Richardson, edited and typed in approximately 1934. It opens with recollections of the early life of Richardson's mother Mary Ann Darrow Richardson (1818-1872), including her conversion to Mormonism while stuck in Salt Lake City on the way to Oregon (despite her early fears of "dreadful Mormons"). He also writes briefly of his father, Edmund Richardson (1816-1874). The autobiography then recalls Richardson's early life in Manti and Springville, and includes many anecdotes of his childhood and school days as well as family life. It also covers his work at the Shoebridge Mill and in the mining camps, his learning Spanish at St. John for missionary work while teaching school, traveling along the Rio Grande, studying law and moving to Mexico, the "depredations of Texas outlaws" around Canyon Creek, Indian attacks near Wilford, and many anecdotes about life in Mexico. Portions of the document were written by Richardson's wife Sarah Louisa Adams ("Sadie") and his brother Sullivan Calvin "Sullie" Richardson. The second portion of the microfilm includes an autobiography of Sullie Richardson (1861-1940). Sullie also includes a variety of childhood anecdotes, including his school experiences, his father's work in the Nevada mines, and other family stories. He also describes traveling through Provo Canyon, encounters with Indians near Prescott, confrontations at Fort Defiance, working on the railroad near Rio Puerco, working for the water service in Brigham City, moving to Mexico and meeting President Diaz, teaching school, working on the Arizona Eastern Railroad, and moving to Thatcher, Arizona.

Microfilm of various materials related to the Richardson family, including a family record, autobiography, and unidentified diary. The reel opens with a family record kept by William Richardson through approximately 1884. It traces his ancestors primarily in Scotland, and includes birth and death dates as well as information on marriages and children.The reel also contains a brief autobiography kept by Mary Muir Hughes Bunnell (a sister-in-law of William Richardson), including descriptions of Mary's childhood in Scotland, her conversion to Mormonism, her move to Utah, and her marriage to Ross Burton Hughes. The reel also contains a diary kept by an unidentified man in about 1894 (although portions are dated 1884-1885 and 1890, and some pages may be out of order on the reel). It primarily chronicles daily activities in Utah such as agricultural work, attendance of religious meetings, and Church and community affairs. The second half of the unidentified diary is included on MSS MFILM 00160.

Typescript of the pamphlet "Reminiscences of the early life of Earl H. Richardson," which includes brief biographies of Richardson by his brother J.R. Richardson and George T. Stamm. Forcuses on Richardson's invention of the orange brusher and his involvement with the electric railway running from Ontario to San Antonio Heights. Also includes several pages of praise for the pamphlet by various friends of Richardson in the southern California area.

Microfilm of the two-volume autobiography and diary of Samuel Hollister Rogers, kept from approximately 1843-1885. The first volume opens with an autobiographical account of Rogers's early life in Ohio, along with extensive family history and anecdotes. The diary portions of the volume cover his mission trip to New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania in 1843-1844; his experiences in Iowa in 1845-1846; and his time with the Mormon Battalion from 1846-1848. The second volume includes diary entries sketching his life in Parowan and St. George from 1855-1881 and in Snowflake from 1881-1885.

Life sketch of Simon Baker [microform]: 1952

Microfilm of the typed life history of Simon Baker by Melba Dolores Hogenson. The brief autobiography traces Baker's childhood, his conversion to Mormonism, the death of his wife and his marriage to Charlotte Leavitt in 1845, his move to Utah, his trade with gold miners in 1849-1850, his various mission and colonization trips in Utah and Nevada, and many notes on his personality and personal anecdotes. The autobiography is preceded by five manuscript pages identified as "journal before 1848" (it is not clear if these pages refer to Baker).

Sketches of pioneer days in Southern Utah and Arizona [microform]: 1923-1924

Microfilm of a collection of typed anecdotes about early Mormon pioneers in Utah and Arizona, primarily written by Sullivan Calvin Richardson. The text opens with a general story of Mormons crossing the plains to Utah and early descriptions of settlements and the landscape. It also notes difficult working condition of laborers on the canal from the Rio Virgin, the building of settlements in Dixie, the construction of Call's Landing, and the giving up of homes on the Muddy River after some were found to be across the Nevada state line (where taxes were too high). The account includes quotes from settlers such as Charley Curtis, William Halladay, George A. Smith, Orville Allen, Lorenzo Watson, and Ammon M. Tenney. The microfilm also includes two poems identified as "The Transformation of the Pioneers," consisting of "Someone's Opinion of Arizona" by Charles O. Brown and "Answer to Some-one's Opinion of Arizona" by S.C. Richardson; a sketch of early Arizona by 'Lige Hancock; sketches of 1870s Arizona pioneers Peter O. Peterson, Andrew Anderson, Andrew Woods, O.C. Oveson, M.H. Peterson, and Andrew Locie Rogers by S.C. Richardson; the text of the "Arizona Song" by "some of the Salt Lake Boys;" and a sketch of Arizona pioneers by Joseph H. Richards.

Life sketch of Lemuel Hardison Redd [microform]: after 1891

Microfilm of Lemuel Hardison Redd's brief autobiography, recorded at White Pine, Nevada, sometime after 1891. Redd briefly describes his early life and journey to Utah, but mainly focuses on his life in Utah after 1850. He describes settling in Spanish Fork, where his father helped build the first saw mill (it was destroyed during the Walker War in 1853), and briefly describes his experiences during the Walker War, his marriage, his mission to Nevada, his participation in the Utah War, and helping colonize New Harmony as part of the Dixie Mission in 1862. Redd also mentions buying the John D. Lee homestead in 1870, helping establish the United Order at Harmony, and moving to San Juan County and later Mexico to avoid polygamy charges. The account also describes in some detail the various activities of Redd's children.
