Description: Microfilm of the two-volume autobiography and diary of Samuel Hollister Rogers, kept from approximately 1843-1885. The first volume opens with an autobiographical account of Rogers's early life in Ohio, along with extensive family history and anecdotes. The diary portions of the volume cover his mission trip to New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania in 1843-1844; his experiences in Iowa in 1845-1846; and his time with the Mormon Battalion from 1846-1848. The second volume includes diary entries sketching his life in Parowan and St. George from 1855-1881 and in Snowflake from 1881-1885.

Diaries of Oliver Boardman Huntington [microform]: 1843-1899. Reel 1

Microfilm of eighteen diary volumes kept by Oliver B. Huntington between 1843 and 1899. The first reel contains volumes 1-11. The first volume is a partial autobiography that includes a history of Huntington's early life and detailed diary entries on his mission to New York in 1843. The second volume is entitled "Compilations of short sketches and journals, commenced December 10, 1845," and includes a more detailed autobiography and diary entries with references to persecutions of Mormons in Missouri, life in Kirtland and Nauvoo, Huntington's 1843 mission, and starting on his mission to England in 1846. Volumes 3-8 cover Huntington's English mission from 1846-1847, and volume 9 was kept while he was living in Cambria, New York, in 1847-1848. Volume 10 traces Huntington's overland travels to Utah in 1848. Volume 11 was kept while Huntington was traveling overland to Nauvoo in 1849, living in New York from 1850-1852, traveling back to Utah in 1852, traveling in Nevada in 1854, teaching school in Utah, and serving on an Indian mission in 1855. Reel two contains volumes 12-18. Volume twelve was kept while Huntington traveled to Fort Bridger in 1856 and to Carson Valley in 1857. The remaining volumes 13-18 were kept while Huntington was living in Utah, primarily at Springville, from 1858-1899.

Diaries of Samuel W. Richards and Mary Richards [microform] : 1839-1876

Microfilm of about seven diaries kept by Samuel Whitney Richards and Mary Richards between 1839 and 1876. Some of the diaries are multiple pieces or are written on loose pages. The first diary was kept by Samuel Richards at Richmond, Massachusetts, from 1839-1840. He writes of going to work for his uncle William Richards, including growing potatoes, putting up fences, plowing, harvesting hay, and other farm work, as well as working in a saw mill. The volume also contains an autobiography which recounts events in Illinois from 1843-1844, particularly regarding the Nauvoo Legion and Joseph Smith, and chronological notes from 1846 recalling departing from Nauvoo and traveling to New York City before sailing to Liverpool. That volume is followed by two diaries kept by Mary Richards at Nauvoo in 1846-1847 and 1848, while Samuel was away serving on a mission to Great Britain. Mary describes her daily and family life as well as events surrounding the Mormon Church. Those diaries are followed by a volume kept by Samuel Richards in 1848, when he was preparing to leave Missouri. It then skips back to his departure from England, a list of Scottish Saints, and an account of traveling up rivers to Winter Quarters. His 1849 diary describes his travels from Iowa to Salt Lake City, and his 1855-1856 and 1876 diaries recall his life in Utah.

Autobiography, diaries, and sketches of Frederick William Hurst [microform] : 1858-1885

Microfilm of an autobiography, diaries, and sketches by Frederick William Hurst and spanning the years from approximately 1858-1885. The first volume consists of an autobiography Hurst wrote in Utah in 1858, and which also contains a few diary entries from 1864 and notes labeled Camp Deseret, 1858. The second volume was kept from 1855-1856 while Hurst was serving as a missionary in Hawaii; the third volume, dated 1857-1858, was begun at San Francisco and describes his missionary work in California and travels to Utah; the fourth, dated 1875-1877, opens in Utah and goes on to describes sailing to Auckland and Hurst's mission work in New Zealand; and the final volume is identified as Memorandum of Missionary Labors Commencing January 12, 1879, and appears to have been kept in Millville and Hyde Park, Utah. Portions of all of the volumes are very faint and partially illegible. The reel also contains fifty sketches done by Hurst between 1855-1885, and which include scenic and structural drawings from California (including San Francisco), Utah, New Zealand, Australia, and Hawaii; sketches of ships, portraits mainly showing women in various forms of historical dress; and a variety of drawings of plants and animals.

Diary and account book of Joseph W. McAllister [microform] : 1882-1885

Microfilm of a diary and account book of Joseph Warrington McAllister, kept at Glendale and Salt Lake City from 1882-1885. The volume opens with co-op accounts for individuals and institutions, including the Glendale Trustees and Night School, in Glendale from 1882-1883. It also includes miscellaneous accounts kept from 1884-1885.The second half of the volume consists of McAllister's 1882-1884 diary, which commences with his move from Kanab to Glendale to teach school. McAllister writes of his life in Glendale, his attendance of meetings at Orderville, his move to Salt Lake City in 1883, and working in the Salt Lake Temple through 1884. Portions of the diary appear to be in pencil and may be partially illegible.

Diary of George Laub, volume one [microform]:

Microfilm of George Laub's diary covering approximately 1845-1857, and identified as Volume 1. The volume is a mixture of autobiography and diary entries, many of which appear to have been copied from an earlier source. The first entry is dated January 1, 1845, but entries before about 1855 are not always in chronological order. The early portion of the volume consists of an autobiography recounting Laub's difficult childhood following the death of his father, his arrival in Nauvoo in 1843, the death of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the expulsion of the Mormons from Nauvoo, Laub's adoption by John D. Lee, and his marriage to Mary Jane Meginness(who converted to Mormonism before their wedding); a combination of diary entries and autobiographical notes cover his moves between Illinois and Iowa from 1846-1847, persecution and mob violence faced by the Mormons in Illinois, his life in Missouri from 1848-1852, and his overland travels to Utah in 1852. The diary entries from 1855 focus on Laub's laboring on mills and his church activities in and around Salt Lake City through 1857. The volume also contains lists of births and deaths, as well as extensive theological notes, addresses, and prophecies copied from Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Heber Kimball, and Brigham Young.
