Visual Materials
View shows fireplace with mirror above it, a cabinet, and a desk. The paintings on the walls are George Romney's Margaret Beckford, later Margaret Orde, and Susan Euphemia Beckford, later Duchess of Hamilton: The Beckford Children (1789-1791); and John Wright of Derby's Young man with cap and gown (circa 1760). The paintings reflected in the mirror are Sir Joshua Reynold's Lord Henry Spender and Lady Charlotte Spencer, later Charlotte Nares: The Young Fortune Teller (circa 1774-1775); and Reynold's the Hon. Theresa Parker, later the Hon. Theresa Villiers (1787). The writing desk (bureau plat) is attributed to Andre-Charles Boulle, with substantial later alterations. The date of the original work is between 1700 and 1705. The chest of drawers (commode) beneath the Romney painting is by Daniel De Loose, from around 1770. The fall front secretary (secrétaire à abbatant) under the Wright painting is by Martin Carlin, from around 1775. The clock on the mantel is stamped Japy Frères et Cie and is from 1785 or later. The Wright painting is the most recent addition to the Huntington collection in the picture: it was acquired by the Huntington in 1933. View of the north end of the small drawing room in the residence, the dining room is visible through the open door. Reflected in the mirror is Thomas Gainsborough's The Cottage Door (circa 1780). Through the door can be seen Gainsborough's Elizabeth (Jenks) Beaufoy, later Elizabeth Pycroft (circa 1780). The clock on the mantel is stamped Japy Frères et Cie and is from 1785 or later. MS note on verso reads "HEH residence as art gallery: large drawing room." This identification as the large drawing room is incorrect. Stamp on verso reads "This print is released as a personal courtesy and is not for publication. All syndicate and publication rights reserved. Eyre Powell Press Service."

The large portrait reflected in the mirror is Sir Thomas Gainsborough's Elizabeth (Jenks) Beaufoy, later Elizabeth Pycroft (circa 1780). Also reflected but slightly obstructed is Sir Joshua Reynolds' Lavinia (Bingham), Countess Spencer, and John Charles Spencer, Viscount Althorp, later Earl Spencer (1783-1784). In the foreground is a table with six chairs around it, on an area rug. Another four chairs are arranged against the wall. The paintings hanging on the wall are all by George Romney: (from left to right) Catherine (Halhead) Burton (1789), Penelope (Rycroft) Lee Acton (1791), and Jeremiah Miles (1780-1783). Above the table is a metal and glass chandelier with electric candles. MS note on verso reads "HEH residence as art gallery: dining room." Stamp on verso reads "Keystone Photo Service, 1231 Olive Street, Los Angeles, Cal." This photograph appeared in Pictorial California and the Pacific in November 1930.
