[see p.]."Very large map. Numerous MS notes off the coast from Barras de Cananca to Ubatuba, inland on the eastern third of the map, especially in the area just northwest of São Paulo. This seems to be the map he used, or at least annotated, most among the maps of Brazil. Verso notes this map was presented to Burton for his trip around the province by A. Moreira de Barro; inscription begins "Ao Illmo. Sñr. Capitão Richard Burton, H.M. Consul..." and is dated 14 February 14 1866. Prime meridian: Ferro. Relief: hachures. Projection: Polyconic. [see p.]."Numerous notes and translations in Burton's hand. "First voyage and extension shown in red, second expedition in yellow, last blue." This map more heavily annotated by Burton than RB 623699.Burton was hired by Alfred Lock to travel to Iceland to evaluate sulfur mines which he had purchased from the Danish government; Burton traveled there from June 4th to September 5th 1872, but on his return Lock refused to pay him. This turned into a protracted legal battle, and Burton returned to Iceland in 1875 to gather information in aid of his case. MS notes in Burton's hand. Stamp: Kensington Public Libraries.. [see p.]."Was cataloged as two separate entries in the catalog of the Burton library, but is in fact two pieces of the same large map of Lancashire. The division seems to have been made prior to Burton acquiring the map, since each section is labeled on the verso.Dedication on lower sheet reads: "To the nobility, clergy & gentry of Lancashire, this map is respectfully dedicated by the Proprietors." View of Liverpool accompanied by printed notes "R. Creighton delt." and "Neele and Son sculpt." Numerous MS notes along the eastern border of the county.
