Explorer routes through early 1850's. This appears to be half of the map with the bottom half missing. Carefully drawn but no identification. After further research this appears to be the top half of Lieutenant Gouvereur Kemble Warren's 1857 map, from which title, author, date, and publisher info has been drawn. Based on the presence of the Oregon territory, the map must have been made after 1853, which provided a starting point for searching Carl L. Wheat's Mapping the Transmississippi West for a map matching this one. The Huntington owns a reproduction of the full map (RB 342277), as well as a revised edition from the late 1860s (RB 43236 & 127677). Hand drawn rail route from Sacramento east. Prime meridian: GM. A Cap. Mendocino verousque ad C.S. Lucae repertum est testibus tabula praedicta et Francisco Gaulo extendi in longitudinem 1700 leucarum.' An interesting map because it is in Mercator projection. Courses plotted would not be the shortest distance between points but perhaps this was meant to be hung in an Admiral's office. Also, the scale is noted as "1:22,640,949," an amazing accuracy probably not really attainable. "Magnetic variation curves are for 1925." "Small corrections '34. Edition: 45th, Oct. 1925. No. 1500. Price 60 cents. Washington, DC published June 1896, at the Hydrographic Office, under the authority of the Secretary of the Navy." Prime meridian: GM. Relief: no. Graphic Scale: none.
