Vere Foster's Drawing Copy Book: Nos. M1, I2 and Q3

    Visual Materials

Three drawing books, entitled Vere Foster's Drawing Copy Book, Nos. M1, I2 and Q3., by E. Duncan, John Callow, and George Whitaker, published by Blackie & Son, London, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, ca. 1868. These three books are part of a series, Vere Foster's Drawing Copy Book. Book M1 is part of the Marine series (in 4 parts) and is titled "Boats, Foregrounds, and Nautical Bits". Book I2 is part of the Ornamental Forms series (in 4 parts) and is titled "Freehand Ornament, Classic and Renaissance"; Book Q3 is part of the Human Figure series (in 4 parts) and is titled "Rustic Figures". The books are 16 (unnumbered) pages in length; each of which contains a black and white illustration, with a blank page for copying. In Book M1, the instructional text begins on the inside of the front cover, and continues on to both sides of the back cover. The back covers of Book I2 and Q3 contain publisher's advertisements and outlines for this and other Vere Foster's series. The illustrations, which are primarily in outline form, are signed by both Callow and Whitaker in Book M1. The images of Book M1 (Marine) include views of nautical implements and boats of various kinds. The front cover is bordered with a decorative design of Celtic origin, and in the center is an engraved portrait of "Her Majesty Queen Victoria at the age of eight, from a portrait presented to Lady Albina Foster". Also on the front cover is the complete list of the drawing and lettering books in the series. The front covers of Books I2 and Q3 are different from that of M1 but similar to each other; each is primarily divided into 4 sections: one large section on the left half of the cover, with the remaining three sections comprising the right-hand half. The largest half contains a sample image from those contained within. These 3 sections are vertically oriented; the top third frames the statement "Embracing every description of drawing, with paper for copying. New Edition"; the middle third contains the name of that individual lesson book; the bottom third frames the price and the statement "Sanctioned by The Department of Science and Art. Adopted by The Board of National Education in Ireland." The images in Book I2 (Ornamental Forms, Classic and Renaissance) are Italian, Greek, Roman and English floral decorative ornaments. The images in Book Q3 (Human Figure, Advanced Figure in Outline) are of hands, feet, and whole-body figures. Each of the 3 books has some ms. writing on its front cover: M1 has "G.R.M." in ink in the upper left-hand corner within the decorative frame; "DK" in pencil written in the upper left-hand corner, and "[pounds sterling symbol] 2.50" (price) written in the upper right-hand corner. Book I2 has "G.R.M." written in the upper left-hand corner within the frame; "D/N" is written in the upper left-hand corner; and "[pounds sterling symbol] 2.00" (price) in the upper right-hand corner. Book Q3 has "D/N" written in the upper left-hand corner, and "[pounds sterling symbol] 2.50" (price) in the upper right-hand corner.
