Photographs of Snader Telescriptions operations and filming of musicians for television, Hollywood, California

    Visual Materials

A collection of photographs (all 4 x 5-inch negatives) depicting the filming of "Snader Telescriptions," three-minute musical performances by popular bands and singers shown on television, 1950-1952. Louis D. Snader, an ex-musician and real estate developer, created these early "music videos" he called Snader Telescriptions (derived from "television" and "transcription"). The company started filming performers in 1950 and ceased production in 1952. The photographs depict singers, bands and orchestras performing and also in group portraits with Snader and other production personnel. The filming took place at Hollywood Center Studios (also known as General Service Studios), in Hollywood, California, and the soundstage, camera crew, lighting, and other aspects of television filming are illustrated in many images. Louis Snader appears in many photographs, as well as producer Duke Goldstone and musical director Phil Moore. The musicians pictured performing are: Lionel Hampton and Betty Carter; Martha Davis and Her Spouse; the Chordettes; George Shearing; Wesley Tuttle; Nat King Cole trio; June Christy with the Ernie Felice quartet; Miguelito Valdez and his Orchestra; Herb Jeffries; Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour; Red Nichols and his Five Pennies; Arthur Lee Simpkins; Clark Dennis; Cab Calloway and his Caboliers; [Patricia Morison?]; Danny Kuaana; and the Starlighters. There are also images of a private screening of the telescriptions at a hotel, with Snader and unidentified people viewing a television screen; and the Snader Telescriptions screen credit logo, dated 1950.
