Reminders of a Sojourn in California, February 1908 to May 1909

Description: This bound album of snapshot photographs appears to document the tourist activities of a woman and her friends in California at the beginning of the twentieth century. The unidentified compiler labeled all the images including the three Pasadena homes in which she stayed during her visit: 149 S. Madison Avenue ("first home"), 300 Palmetto Drive ("second home"), and 44 S. Orange Grove Avenue ("third home"). The photographs depict common tourist sites of the era including the San Gabriel Mission, Mt. Lowe, San Gabriel Canyon, San Diego and Coronado Island, Catalina Island, Venice canals and beach, Redlands, Riverside, Redondo, Lake Tahoe, the gardens at the Hotel del Monte, Mission San Juan Capistrano, the Old Mill, Mission Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Berkeley, and San Ysidro. There are pictures of women driving automobiles, having picnics, and taking beach and other excursions, as well as many pictures of regional trees and flowers. There are also several photographs of ships-- including the "Atlantic Fleet" at San Diego, with the ships the Connecticut, the Vermont, and the California, as well as sailors identified as "Jackies" in a parade in San Diego. Photographs of ethnic groups include pictures of Chinese women at Castroville (pg 82) and of Native American children at the Sherman Institute in Riverside (pgs 45-46). Since Pasadena was home base for the travelers, many photographs depict local friends and events such as the Tournament of Roses celebration of 1909 and the New Year's Day games at Tournament Park.

This small, personal album of amateur photographs documents a trip through Southern California, ca. 1880s, from San Juan Capistrano through San Diego County. Of note are views of Indian schools and dwellings in the San Diego area. All of the photographs are accompanied by ink manuscript captions. Subjects are: Mission San Juan Capistrano; two views of people with horse and buggy on the shore near Oceanside; caves at La Jolla; adobe building at Old Town [San Diego, possibly Casa de Estudillo]; Indian schools in Old Mission Valley; people camping among the old olive trees on the Old Mission ranch; Sweetwater Dam; mud and brush huts at Agua Caliente; camping by the roadside before reaching Strawberry Valley [San Diego County]. The album has paper covers, tied with a ribbon binding. The cover has a hand-painted title: Views of Southern California. The compiler and photographer are unknown.

This album contains typical commercial photographs of the towns and scenery of California, Oregon and Washington dating from the 1890s. Of note are early views of San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Tacoma, and Seattle. There are also views of California missions and coastal landscapes. The Oregon photographs are of scenery only. Photographs of California include San Diego; Casa de Estudillo in Old Town San Diego; Mission San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and Santa Barbara; Santa Barbara; San Luis Obispo; Confederate general James Longstreet's Los Angeles home; the Bellevue Terrace Hotel; various Los Angeles homes; Pasadena; Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin's Santa Anita ranch; San Francisco city scenes; and wilderness en route to Oregon. Oregon photographs show images of the Columbia River; Mt. Hood; Latourell Falls; Multnomah Falls; and nature scenes. Photographs of Washington state include Tacoma; Green River; Native Americans from an unidentified tribe; Seattle; and Angeline, the daughter of Chief Seattle of the Suquamish tribe. Twenty-six of the pictures in this album were photographed by Isaiah West Taber and twenty-two were photographed by W.H.J. and Company. It may be that William H. Jeffers created those twenty-two photographs, as he was active in California during this time period. Other photographers who contributed to this album include Thomas H. Rutter, Charles B. Talbot, and Boyd & Braas (William F. Boyd and George H. Braas). The initials "E.B.R." and the year 1897 are embossed on the photo album's spine.
