    The collection consists of letters, chiefly from Daniel M. Berry, describing Southern California and the events leading to the founding of Pasadena. There is also a manuscript by Thomas B. Elliott titled, "History of the San Gabriel Orange Grove Association." The collection also has 12 photographs, including those of Thomas Balch Elliott, his wife Helen, son Whittier, and daughters Agnes, and Helen Elliott Bandini, and her husband Arturo Bandini (son of California politician and ranchero Juan Bandini), their children Ralph Bandini, Elliott Bandini, Georgia Elliott, and Judge Elisha Oscar Crosby.

    An expediente or case file for land granted by Juan Bautista Alvarado to Raymundo Olivas and Felipe Lorenzana, known as Immediacion á Los Serritos (later named Rancho San Miguel) encompassing the present day City of Ventura not within Rancho Ex-Mission San Buenaventura, with the Santa Clara River marking its southern boundary. Includes signed statements by Raymundo Olivas, Fernando Fico, Rafael Gonzalez, Santiago Arguello, and a grant by the Governor of Mexican Alta California, Juan Bautista Alvarado.

    California land grant research materials for William W. Clary

    Four letters and one set of research notes regarding George Tays' work at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. In the letters, Tays agrees to research land grants in California for William W. Clary, sends weekly updates on his progress, and complains about poor transcripts at the Bancroft. Also included are two sets of research notes (one is included in a letter) on land acquisitions and ownership in Mexican California from Los Angeles to San Diego Counties. One set of notes focuses on land litigation in San Gabriel in the 1820s, with information from the California Archives, the Board of Harbor Commissioners, and various secondary sources on the San Gabriel river and San Pedro Bay. The other set of notes includes references to land owned by Juan Jose Nieto and Juan Jose Dominguez. Carbon copies, some with handwritten notes.

    The Corridors at San Juan

    A collection of albumen photographs of 12 California Missions, taken by nineteenth-century photographer William Henry Jackson sometime between 1885 and 1890. All of the photographs are titled and signed, "W.H.J. & Co." One or more images of the following missions are included: San Antonio de Padua, San Carlos Borroméo de Carmel, San Diego de Alcalá, San Fernando Rey, San Francisco de Asís, San Gabriel Arcángel, San Juan Bautista, San Juan Capistrano, San Luis Rey, San Miguel Arcángel, Santa Barbara and Santa Ines. The photographs primarily show the missions' front façades or courtyards, both in ruins and with slight repair work.
