Description: Four letters and one set of research notes regarding George Tays' work at the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. In the letters, Tays agrees to research land grants in California for William W. Clary, sends weekly updates on his progress, and complains about poor transcripts at the Bancroft. Also included are two sets of research notes (one is included in a letter) on land acquisitions and ownership in Mexican California from Los Angeles to San Diego Counties. One set of notes focuses on land litigation in San Gabriel in the 1820s, with information from the California Archives, the Board of Harbor Commissioners, and various secondary sources on the San Gabriel river and San Pedro Bay. The other set of notes includes references to land owned by Juan Jose Nieto and Juan Jose Dominguez. Carbon copies, some with handwritten notes.

Collection of letters, receipts, and notes relating to Oscar Shuck's research on California state senator Samuel Bell, compiled at the request of Bell's son Harmon. Includes a bound volume of notes on Samuel Bell's time in the California state senate as a representative of Alameda and Santa Clara counties (1857-1858) and the California state assembly (1862), as well as his involvement in the founding of the College of California (U.C. Berkeley). Also includes two letters relating to the Presbytery of San Francisco and the Congregational Association of America.

This group of material contains a random assortment of correspondence and pieces of ephemera regarding California. There is one letter from 1850 which discusses the various steamboat lines and mail services from California and potential routes for future services. A postcard from a child to her parents regarding her stay in Little Shasta has a photo of the area. The bill of lading is for Levi-Strauss regarding a shipment of overalls to San Francisco. The carte-de-visite is of a young woman and it was taken by the S.S. Noble studios. The envelope has a stamp from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. There is a marriage announcement for Augustus C. Cabel and Mrs. Nellie E. Smith of San Francisco. There is also a 1942 issue of Ghost Town News published by Knott's Berry Farm. The photographs are of Mono County, California and include images of cabins in Masonic and Bodie and an avalanche in Lundy and Jordan which destroyed the hydraulic power plants. The telephone directory contains contact information for actors in San Francisco. The title documents are for parcels of land in San Bernardino. There is also one printed book: Reports of cases: Supreme Court of California.

The collection contains letters, documents, manuscripts, maps, clippings and photographs related to California history, especially that of the San Bernardino County region. There are also materials related to Mormon pioneers in the San Bernardino Valley and education in the Philippine Islands. Most of the items in the collection are secondary source materials gathered by the Beatties in the course of their research on California history.

Grant for 1,000 acres of land between the Little Miami and Scioto Rivers, northwest of Ohio River, Ohio, to Amelia Shaler, Eliza Conran, and Mary Ann Lewis, daughters of Abraham Kirkpatrick, former soldier, deceased. Signed by President James Monroe; also signed by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs, with recording notes on reverse. Printed form, filled in by hand.
