    A collection containing 51 items of official correspondence and papers of General Andrew Pickens, chiefly those accumulated during his service as federal commissioner in 1785-1797. Included is Pickens' correspondence with the Governor of South Carolina, Thomas Pinckney, other federal commissioners, and the Indian chief Alexander McGillivray. The collection also contains communications from the Congress and the War Department, and other related papers. Also included are a few items related to the military career, business, and personal affairs of Pickens, including documents pertaining to Andrew Pickens and Company. Correspondents include James McHenry, Henry Knox, John Armstrong, Marinus Willett, and others. There are also a few items related to Pickens' son, Andrew Pickens (1779-1838), Governor of South Carolina in 1816-1818, including two letters to him from Thomas Flournoy (1820).

    The collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, and photographs related to Spalding's life and interest in Los Angeles civic affairs. There is correspondence (1861-1941), business papers (1883-1929), and drafts of speeches (mainly given before Los Angeles civic organizations). Also included are Spalding's autobiography and additional biographical material.

    Correspondence related to the academic career of Andrew F. Rolle. Includes copies of outgoing correspondence from Rolle as well as letters from his colleagues Ray Allen Billington, Louis B. Wright, and K. Ross Toole. Most of the correspondence focuses on Rolle's published books and articles, including those on Italian-Americans in the Western United States, various articles written for the Historical Society of Montana, writings on the history of Occidental College, the manuscript "Flight Below the Border" (1959), and the article "The Historic Past of the Unconscious" (1980). The collection also includes some personal correspondence and references to other historians, including Robert Glass Cleland. Also included are newspaper articles and ephemera relating to Billington's death in 1981.

    These are likely Mr. Cole's personal notes about the Huntington collections, comprised of lists of a variety of holdings of the library, and acquisitions made by the Huntington between 1915 and 1924. It includes Mr. Cole's notes regarding variations within different printings of various texts (for example, differences in two copies of Bacon's "Wisdom of the Ancients" both from the same year, with different typeset), as well as listings of famous first editions, incunabula, Shakespeare quartos, and historical papers in the Huntington collection; lists of holdings in other libraries; lists of items sent to galleries, exhibits, or for exchange or sale; physical descriptions and comparisons of texts; biographical histories of certain authors; and lists of things not in the Huntington's collection. Additionally, it also includes some material on bibliography, and a cataloging guide from 1920 of HEHL cataloging practice. Most of the material is undated.
