    James D. Hague papers addenda

    Manuscripts

    The addenda contains correspondence, business papers, estate material, diaries, account books, scrapbooks, photographs, and other material related to the work and family of James D. Hague. Other Hague family members represented in the addenda include Marian Hague, his son William Hague, and Mary Hallock Foote. Subjects included in the collection: Clarence King, mining, engineering, Guano Island, South Seas (Oceania), Japan, and the Lick Observatory. Also found in the addenda is a small group of papers of Horace F. Cutter of San Francisco, a friend of Clarence King; and a small group of papers of Edward Singleton Holden, who was an astronomer and Hague family friend. Holden was director of the Lick Observatory, president of the University of California, and librarian of West Point. The addenda also contains unprocessed folders and boxes of ephemera and realia including a chemical set, ore specimens, and printed material; photographs in Boxes 57-63 were transferred to the Photo Archive.

    Surveying notes on California ranchos

    Notebook compiled by J.W. Mandeville, including written descriptions of California ranchos, their histories, geographic features, and handrawn maps. Ranchos and geographic areas described include Laguna de San Antonio, Roblar de la Miseria, Arroyo Seco (Alameda County), Rincon de Musalacon, Tzabaco Rancho, Rancho San Antonio (Peralta), Rancho San Leandro, Rancho San Lorenzo, Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda, Rancho los Tulareitos, and Rancho del Agua Caliente. The back of the book contains what appear to be student exercises and notes, including poetry, recipes for gunpowder and ink, and notes on the preservation and taxidermy of birds. These notes are in a variety of handwritings and dated 1876-1904.

    George Wharton James papers

    A collection of 266 items which consists of personal and professional papers of George Wharton James; the collection includes correspondence, lectures, sermons, articles, 2 scrapbooks, photographs, and ephemera (1871-1921). The manuscripts cover such topics as the Grand Canyon, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Native Americans, American literature and humor, religion, overseas travels, and biographical pieces on Jesse Benton Fřmont, William Ewart Gladstone, Lilla Leighton Lindley, William McKinley, Queen Victoria, and others. The correspondence includes letters and other material relating to the Robert Browning Centenary and letters from applicants for summer school at Echo Mountain, near Pasadena, California. The Addenda consists of letters and poems sent to James; the poems were probably intended for publication in Land of sunshine or Out west magazine and included are pieces by, among others, Thomas Bracken, Frona Eunice Wait, and Helen Hunt Jackson. The ephemera includes programs, lecture announcements, clippings and other printed material.

    James De Barth Shorb Papers

    The collection, which contains 10,844 items, consists of correspondence, letter books, manuscripts, speeches, diaries, account books, published articles, legal papers, financial statements and business records. The 10,528 pieces of correspondence are chiefly addressed to James De Barth Shorb, James M. Tiernan and Maria de Jesus Wilson Shorb. The 17 letter books are related to the business and financial affairs of Shorb and Benjamin Davis Wilson. The 75 manuscripts consist of items chiefly written by Shorb and Wilson family members. The 224 items in the Business Papers include material related to Shorb's many companies including the San Gabriel Wine Company. The following subjects are covered in the Shorb collection: the Shorb, Wilson, and Patton families, David Jacks, Mariano Vallejo, Santa Catalina Island, the Mount Wilson Observatory, California government and politics, African Americans and the Chinese in California, agriculture, the citrus fruit industry, Indians of California, irrigation, lend tenure, mining, railroads, ranching, water rights, and the wine industry. The collection also documents the history and development of the following California cities: Alhambra, Elsinore, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Ramona, San Gabriel, San Marino, and Wilmington. These letters deal with the Shorb family from 1917 to 1957. The group contains a large run of love letters to Ethel from a man named John Gaylord Church. Letter Books The 17 letter books concern the business and financial affairs of James De Barth Shorb, Benjamin Davis Wilson, and B. D. Wilson & Co. Their inclusive dates are 1870-1894. Manuscripts The 75 manuscripts consist of notes, speeches, diaries, account books, and drafts and copies of published articles and manuscripts. The majority of the authors are Wilson and Shorb family members. This group contains several manuscripts by Benjamin Davis Wilson including "The Indians of Southern California: Report to the Superintendent of Indian Affairs" and several copies and drafts of his "Observations on Early Days in California and New Mexico." Subjects covered in the manuscripts are: early California history; Shorb, Wilson, and Patton family history; California government and politics; Helen Hunt Jackson and Ramona; irrigation; agriculture; and land ownership. This group also includes a diagram of the Battle of Gainesville drawn by John Singleton Mosby in 1891. Business Papers The 224 items in the Business Papers consist of reports, notes, legal papers, by-laws and articles of incorporation, financial statements, record and account books, stock certificates, and agreements. The business papers deal with the financial and business affairs of James De Barth Shorb and Benjamin Davis Wilson and include material related to mining in California, Colorado, and South Dakota; Los Angeles politics; water and irrigation; and the wine industry. Authors include the following companies: Arizona Improvement Company, San Marino Mill and Mining Co., Alhambra Addition Water Company, Lake Vineyard Land and Water Association, San Gabriel Water Company, La Sierra Water Company, B. D. Wilson & Co., American Concentrated Must Co., and the San Gabriel Wine Company.

    Charles A. Leake letter to James W. Denver

    Manuscripts

    Charles A. Leake wrote this letter to James W. Denver from "Sacramento City" and the letter is devoted almost entirely to California state politics. He writes at length upon the recently-concluded Democratic state party convention, the maneuverings therein of various factions, and the circumstances of leading California political figures such as former governor John Bigler and current U.S. senator David Broderick, as well as the influence of events in California upon national political events.

    James Milo Alexander papers

    The collection consists primarily of material from both James Milo Alexander and John Hanks Alexander. There are various pieces of correspondence such as letters to family members and a letter designating Stevedore Cantonment in Virgina as Camp Alexander (1918) in John Hanks Alexander's honor. James Milo Alexander is represented by several items including: Two account books (1862-1865), various certificates including a permit to carry arms for home defense (1865), a marriage certificate after emancipation (1866), a birth notice for his daughter, Glenn A. Alexander (1856), and a small photograph. The collection also contains a few pieces of printed matter including an announcement for a meeting to celebrate the ratification of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution (1870) and a newspaper clipping from 1939. There is an itinerary written by John Hanks Alexander of the march of "M" Troop, 9th Cavalry from Fort Washakie, Wyoming to Fort DuChesne, Utah (1888). The collection also contains a few letters to to Titus Alexander, brother of John Hanks Alexander
