30+ items: LAT clips (and a few other items) following the ups and downs of Barry Goldwater's 1964 primary races, the Republican nomination for president in the summer of that year, and the final campaign and defeat. Notable item: a 5/20/1964 letter from Edwin McDowell of the Arizona Republic, to James Bassett, Director of LAT Editorial Page, expressing "disappoin(ment) that the conservative Times...decided to support Rockefeller in preference to Goldwater."

Crossword error

Approx. 12 items: letters and post cards sent by readers complaining that LAT ran the same crossword puzzle on two consecutive days. Subsequent memos and form letters explain that the mistake/misprint appeared in 2,000 copies of LAT. Readers were sent the puzzle that they missed.

Approx. 75 items: letters, reprints clippings and other materials related correspondence with persons with names beginning with W. Includes: collection of letters critical of Thomas or LAT, more than one dealing with what comics are run or not run ; collection of letters taking exception to statements made in LAT ; one letter (12/5/1985) begins, "I am a freelance journalist...on the skids. I hope you'll give me a job..." ; another, "I recognize you as a great editor, I feel that I am a great journalist..." ; many letters are from a Barry Winningham, who wrote bizarre letters to Thomas for several years ; letters to Thomas from fringe organizations (or individuals) offering him awards, etc. ; more. Split into two folders.
