Arizona Newspaper Association Convention

Three copies of a speech given by Otis Chandler at the Arizona Newspaper Association on January 21, 1977. One of the copies does not include the introduction and another copy has hand written notes on it. Other items in this folder include two letters from Eugene N. Marten, Publisher of The Verde Independent, requesting Chandler to be speaker and the other he thanks Chandler for accepting. Attached to these two letters are notes from Freddie Miller urging Chandler to accept. A letter of praise from Mrs. Eugene C. Pulliam [Nina Pulliam], Publisher of the Phoenix Republic and Gazette; a letter of praise from William J. Woestendiek, Executive Editor of The Arizona Daily Star; a memo from Robert L. Flannes to Otis Chandler regarding Alan Moyer. Attached to this memo is a note from Donna Swayze to Freddie Miller informing her that Chandler already talked to Moyer and Chandler declined the speech request. A thank you letter from Hal Marshall, Director at The University of Arizona News Bureau, and a response thank you letter from Otis Chandler; a letter for praise from Paul A. McKalip, Senior Editor at the Tucson Daily Citizen, and a response thank you letter from Otis Chandler.

Cate School Commencement Address

Four copies of a speech given by Otis Chandler at the Cate School Commencement Exercises on June 6, 1970. One of the copies includes an introduction. Other items included in this folder are three letters of correspondence with Frederick F. Clark, Headmaster at The Cate School, in which Clark ask Chandler to be speaker, Chandler accepts, and Clark thanks him and sends him information; two letters of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Al Neuharth, Executive Vice President and General Manager of The Gannett Newspapers, in which Chandler sent him a congratulatory letter on his new position, and Neuharth replies with a thank you and a request for a copy of the speech; two letters of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Peter McBean, in which McBean congratulates Chandler on a great speech and also asks Chandler to make a contribution to the school, and Chandler replies with a thank you and informs him that a contribution is not possible at this time.

Three copies of a speech entitled "Can We Believe Washington" given by Otis Chandler at the Distinguished Alumnus Lecture at Stanford University on March 4, 1968. Also included in this folder are two copies of Seminar, A Quarterly Review for Newspapermen, which reprinted the speech; a copy of the Stanford Alumni Almanac which includes a reprint of the speech; twenty-four original and photocopies of newspaper clippings about the speech; a three page tentative schedule; two copies of a two page tentative schedule revised on 2/16/68; a dinner guest list with hand writing on it; a memo from Jeff Littleboy, Associate Editor for News and Publication Service at Stanford University, asking for an advance copy of the speech; a thank you letter from Clifford F. Weigle, Executive Head at Stanford University, thanking Otis Chandler for the visit, attached to the letter is the response letter from Otis Chandler; two letters of correspondence between Clifford F. Weigle and Freddie Miller, regarding the possibility of Otis Chandler holding seminars with students; three letters of correspondence, two are from Lyle L. Erb, editor of Seminar, in which he requests a copy of the speech and the other letter is a thank you letter, and the third letter is Freddie Miller responding and providing a copy of the speech; a memo from Robert C. Lobdell to Otis Chandler asking him is he is considering publishing his speech; three congratulatory letters; nine items of correspondence requesting copies of the speech, five letters are request, the other four of the letters are response letters attached to the request; a thank you letter from Ross Williams, an attorney, in regards to the receipt of a copy of the speech; a letter from Herbert Brucker, Director of Professional Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University, in regards to the speech topic and he also sends him a copy of an article; thirteen letters of correspondence between Otis Chandler, Freddie Miller and Lyle M. Nelson, Director of University Relations at Stanford University, regarding the details of the trip and the speech; and eight letters of correspondence to Otis Chandler, regarding the day of the speech and his responses to them.

Four copies of a speech given by Otis Chandler before the Dallas Assembly on September 11, 1974. One of the copies has a note from Freddie Miller which states that said mention copy was the intended speech, but was revised and in the end not given. Other items in this folder include a clipping of an article from The Quill entitled "A Case For The Professional"; a thank you letter sent to Alan B. Gilman, Chairman of the Board of Sanger-Harris [a department store chain, owned by Federated Department Stores and headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In 1987, in the face of oil-shock facing Texas, the division was merged into Federated's Houston-based division Foley's].

Four copies of a speech given by Otis Chandler at the Colorado Press Association Convention on February 21, 1969. Four of the copies are in pamphlet form. Also in this folder are twenty-three letters of correspondence, which included two letters of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Palmer Hoyt, Editor and Publisher of the Denver Post, in which Hoyt is sending Chandler tear sheets and Chandler response with a thank you letter; two letters of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Harold Willens, President of Factory Equipment Supply Corporation, requesting copies of the speech and Chandler informing him there weren't enough printed; eight letters of correspondence in which six are inviting Otis Chandler as guest speaker and two Otis Chandler accepts; seven letters and two note cards of correspondence, seven items in which congratulate Otis Chandler on a great speech and two Otis Chandler response with thank yous; a thank you letter from Ken Johnson, General Manager of the Daily Sentinel; and a letter from Hal Hall, Owner and Manager of the Red Mountain Lodge, in which he criticizes Otis Chandler's speech.
