John Birch Society - Editorial Background

    Manuscripts

Approx. 90 items. In a 2 pp. cover letter, related to submission of a series of articles and a front page editorial (1961) on the John Birch Society, Williams refers to the doctrines of the Birch Society as "shallow fanaticism," and "a subversive attack upon the spirit as well as the Constitution." Other items include: a tally of reader responses to The Times' stand; various communications from those on both sides of the JBS question; complaints and subscription cancellation letters; bulletin of JBS for November 1964, titled "Now Will You Join the John Birch Society?" In this time frame, reader reaction to the newspaper's stance on JBS showed opposition to be slightly in the majority.

A representative of the John Birch Society demanded a retraction for publication by LAT of a statement of Gov. Edmund. Brown regarding the JBS. There seems to be at least two Greenberg stories mentioned here that JBS took exception to.
