Williams implies that W. might be a communist dupe. W. replies, "My intentions are to see that the news is printed as factually as...possible."; exchange of letters on Editor & Publisher questionnaire, "...New Directions in Journalism"; exchange of letters with John Wayne related to the film, "The Alamo," Americanism, and other topics; the ups and downs of the Space program ; letter typical of early 1960s from Lee Wright (Canoga Park, 1964) complaining of LAT's shift from conservatism and canceling his subscription; ads taken by opponents of Vietnam war; exchange of letters with James Brady, editor of WWD, in which B. complains that Joyce Haber (LAT) has plagiarized from Women's Wear Daily, W. responds; LAT cookbook; popularity of various LAT segments, including advertising; phosphates in laundry detergent; letter from A. Subjects include: exchange of letters related to LAT judges for Spot News Category of the Texas Gridiron Club Contest; air-mailing daily copies of LAT to U.S. Senate members in DC; W. gives Paul Sheehan permission to use excerpts from LAT stories in a book; congratulatory letters to William Thomas on promotion; letter from Scientific American requesting consideration; handwritten note from Pierre Salinger; several of W.'s articles following his retirement from Editor's post, including one--"Love Letters Don't Begin: 'Dear Editor'"--that is a sort of post-mortem for decades of newspaper work; many letters from readers commenting on his post-retirement articles; etc.

Subjects include: a selection of amiable letters referring to W.'s post-retirement columns, with replies; letters continue to appear from Clore Warne, a long-time subscriber who has no end of suggestions on what the paper should write about, incl. W. in his columns; more letters (and an editorial torn from LAT page & marked in green ink) voicing opinions about the "politics" of LAT and its top editors and publisher, i.e. "Hooey."; new light is shed on 1906 "Brownsville Affray," in which 167 soldiers from an all-black unit were dishonorably discharged -- exchange of letters between author John Weaver and W.; etc.

John Sparkman (of Alabama) after a Jack Smith wrote in his column that "to play football at Alabama is a certificate of not having a college education"; exchange of letters over a controversial graduation speech at South Pasadena H.S and LAT story about it; responsibilities of the press; etc.

Subjects include: furor over columnist Morrie Ryskind's criticisms of LAT and AP; the William Wieland case; Khrushchev visit to USA; exchange of letters with Barry Goldwater encouraging him to continue his column for the LA Times Syndicate; dropping of "Dick Tracy" comic from the Times & extended exchange with Chester Gould, creator of the comic; exchange of letters between J.J. McClellan, a V.P. of Facelle Co., and Williams, after the company accused the Times story "Grocery Shelf Psychology" of being "biased and inaccurate"; the films of John Wayne--good and bad; etc. Aug. 13, 1965 letter to Wes Gallagher notes that the LAT "is under constant and frequently outrageous attack by some elements of the extreme right."

Subjects include: editorial cartoons; an incident in which LAT columnist Art Ryon, allegedly drunk, spoke to the annual meeting of the Agricultural Council of Calif. at the El Mirador Hotel, Palm Springs; Richard Reston's personal impressions of working the Moscow Bureau in letter to Williams; cancer drugs; community seminar-racial understanding; exchange of letters with Assemblyman Leo Ryan; members of Rigby family take exception to reportage on plane crash that killed one family member and injured others, and after which a 15 year-old boy struggled through snowstorm to bring help; etc. Nelson Rockefeller letter removed from Autograph File and returned to Williams Subject Files.
