California ; HC interest in L.A. harbor development (pp. 5) ; dealings with William Randolph Hearst (pp. 6 - 7) ; giant ranch in Baja Calif. ; May has a riding accident (pp. 11) ; her memories of the 1910 bombing (pp. 12) ; Herbert Hoover asks HC "will you support me for president?" and is told "of course" ; HC and his wife did not enjoy big social events ; May answers Bassett's question "was your father a tough man?"
