Description

"Approx. 60 items. Folder includes letters, memos, luncheon programs, L.A.T. policy statements, several very angry letters from readers who criticize the Times' content. One writer decries "all that (the Times) is doing to destroy the moral fiber of the nation." These letters date from 1967-68 and most are addressed to Otis Chandler. Also in the folder are a1968 interview with Otis Chandler conducted by Ken Green, representing Bank of America (14 pp. transcript), several letters sharply critical of editorial cartoonist Paul Conrad, etc. "

    Two items of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Robert L. Aronoff regarding a letter that Ken Levitt sent to Aronoff. The two items of correspondence include a note to Chandler and a response letter to Aronoff. Other items in this folder include a note to Bill [?] from Freddie Miller; the letter that Ken Levitt sent to Aronoff; and a photocopy of the article written by the Los Angeles Times about the fire in Levitt's apartment building.

The subject matter or the letters varies, several are congratulatory notes on the release of a film based on Bassett's novel, In Harm's Way in 1965.

Included are letters from Williams to the American Press Institute, the New York Times (Turner Catledge), Los Angeles County Young Republicans, Pitzer College (Mary Ann Callan), Mrs. Otis ("Missy") Chandler, columnist Paul Coates, Dr. Clifford B. Cherry (wrote to object to reporting of his wife's suicide) etc. Subjects include Times' reportage, the new movie ratings system (1968), the Clean Air Council, etc.
