Description: 50+ items: LAT news stories and editorials on Fletcher Bowron and his service to L.A. as mayor, and later as judge, including everything from feuds with LAT to endorsements of him by LAT and back to feuding. Notable among these items is one letter, 1974, from Albine Bowron, the mayor's widow, to James Bassett, a high-ranking LAT editor, and another, 1974, from Mayor Tom Bradley (L.A.) to retired Chief Justice Earl Warren.

7 items: letter, 9/7/1938, "Bowron for Mayor" flyer, to "Members of the Police and Fire Departments, City of Los Angeles" ; copy of "Recall Petition" aimed at Bowron (1939), mentioning "his demoralizing influence on all who come in contact with him" - the origin of this recall is not recorded ; booklet, "Mayor's Message (with) 1946 - 47 Proposed Budget, City of Los Angeles, Honorable Fletcher Bowron, Mayor" ; 7-pp. transcript of "Broadcast by Mayor Fletcher Bowron -- Station KFI" - 1/6/1952 ; 7-pp. transcript of "Broadcast (by Bowron)" - 6/15/1952 ; letter, 12/20/1956, from Fletcher Bowron to Kyle Palmer, LAT Political Editor, thanking him for the fact that LAT had given him "fair treatment... as a candidate for election as Judge of the Superior Court," since, but this is not mentioned, LAT had often attacked him in the past ; 6-pp. list of "Signers of the nominating petition for the re-election of...Bowron, filed February 5 (1942, 1944?)," followed by alphabetical list of names.

"Contempt" Case

Approx. 20 items - wire service printouts on cases, letters, news clips and other material related to LAT contempt case. Includes: 16-pp. transcript from Supreme Court of U.S., "Times-Mirror Co. vs. Superior Court (CA) ; several pieces of correspondence involving L.D. Hotchkiss, Times Editor ; includes a letter, n.d., from L.A. Mayor Fletcher Bowron to Judge Clarence Kincaid on Bowron's efforts, as he puts it, to "stamp out bribery and corruption" and to attack underworld. Note: it is not clear what connection, if any, this letter has to the LAT contempt action and defense.

Warren, Earl - Clippings

Approx. 90 items: LAT news stories and editorial copies on the activities and career of Earl Warren during the 1959 - 1975 time frame. Warren was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1953 until 1969, when he retired. The folder also contains these items: Page One LAT obit copy, 7/10/1974, "Earl Warren, 83, Chief Justice for 16 years, dies" ; clip, 7/16/1974, Santa Monica Outlook [conservative], He seized Golden Chance to become liberal hero," closes with the phrase "here was a great American" ; original 55-pp.booklet, In Memoriam - Honorable Earl Warren, Chief Justice , Supreme Court of the United States, 5/27/1975, text of tributes and testimonials to the memory of Justice Warren.
