Visual Materials
The Huntington Library's Collection of Panoramic Photographs, 1851 to 2014, depicts a wide variety of subjects and provides an important resource for the visual history of the United States, with a particular emphasis on California and the American West. Subjects include landscapes, group portraits, and miscellaneous views. The collection also contains photographs by some of the better known photographers and photographic firms of the first part of the twentieth century. Typed manuscript of Morrow Mayo's 1933 book Los Angeles, which includes handwritten editing notations. The manuscript opens with the founding of Los Angeles and its Spanish and missionary origins, and topics covered include the development of railroads, agriculture, social history, real estate, population growth, labor conflicts, the role of newspapers, and the development of local areas such as Pasadena, the Owens Valley, and Hollywood. Various extended anecdotes include those on the 1910 bombing of the L.A. Times building and subsequent trial of J.B. and J.J. McNamara and the arrest of William Edward Hickman for the murder of Marion Parker, as well as biographies of Times publisher Harrison Gray Otis, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, and physicist Robert A. Millikan.
