Description

Four copies of a speech given by Otis Chandler at the Allen Memorial Lecture before the Oregon Press Conference on February 19, 1971. Other items in this folder include three copies of the Oregon Publisher, January, February and March; a letter from Carl C. Webb, Manager of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Inc., requesting the title of the speech, copies of the speech and Chandler's travel itinerary; a thank you letter from Carl C. Webb; a letter to Freddie Miller from Carl C. Webb regarding transportation arrangements and possible weather problems, this letter has notes attached to it of correspondence between Freddie Miller and Donna Swayze; a pamphlet about the Eric W. Allen Memorial Fund; a note from Freddie Miller informing Chandler of possible activities; a letter from Freddie Miller to Carl C. Webb, in which she forwards a photograph of Chandler; a letter to Freddie Miller from Carl C. Webb in which Webb request biographical information, a photograph and a speech subject; a letter from Carl C. Webb informing Chandler of his appreciation for accepting the invitation; a letter to Carl C. Webb in which Chandler accepts the invitation; a letter from Carl C. Webb inviting Chandler to be the lecturer; an Oregon Press Conference leaflet; a letter from Robert W. Chandler, Editor of The Bulletin, informing Otis Chandler that he and his wife will not be able to attend; a letter from Robert D. Clark, President of the University of Oregon, informing Chandler how delighted he is that he accepted the invitation to speak; a letter from A.D. Addison, Publisher of The News-Review, requesting Chandler to address the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce; a letter to A.D. Addison informing him that the invitation is appreciated, but it will not be possible to address the Chamber of Commerce; a letter from A.D. Addison thanking Chandler for the consideration.

    Correspondence and other items pertaining to a speech Otis Chandler gave at the Management Conference on Tuesday, November 15, 1977. A note from Freddie Miller states there is no formal copy of the speech. Other items in this folder include a pamphlet of the meeting; a December 1977 copy of Among Ourselves; a copy of the Management Conference bulletin on a blue back; a letter from Chuck Morrow, President of the Management Conference, confirming that Chandler will be the speaker; an note from Tom Johnson to Freddie Miller informing her that he has put it on the schedule; a photocopy of a page from the Management Conference Buletin about Freddie Miller, and a thank you letter from Chuck Morrow.

    Meet the Press Appearance

    There is no copy of a speech in this file. Only correspondence regarding Otis Chandler's appearance on Meet the Press on August 3, 1968. Six letters of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Lawrence E. Spivak, of Meet the Press, regarding travel arrangements and details about the program, also a letter informing Chandler that the show was well received; a letter to Lawrence E. Spivak from Freddie Miller, informing him where he can purchase clips which he inquired about in a letter to Otis Chandler; two pieces of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Henry "Hank" Rieger, Director of Press and Publicity at the National Broadcasting Company, Inc., regarding press photos from the show; and two pieces of correspondence between Libby Martini and Otis Chandler, in which Libby Martini praises Otis Chandler on his appearance and he thanks her.

    Three copies of a speech given by Otis Chandler at the Fourth Annual Institutional Investor Conference on March 18, 1971. These copies are printed leaflets. Other items in this folder include a copy of a newspaper article; a thank you letter from Heidi Fiske, Director of Conference Programming at Institutional Investor Systems, Inc.; a letter from Richard F. Colabella, Conference Director of Fourth Annual Institutional Investor Conference, in which he invites Chandler to the Conference Exposition Center; a note from Sandy Hewitt to Freddie Miller informing Miller that 2,500 copies of the speech have been mailed out; a letter from Heidi Fiske in which she forwards Chandler the speaker information materials; six items which included a note from Freddie Miller; a letter from Edwin Gill of Cogan, Berlind, Weill & Levitt, Inc. which he informs Chandler that he [Gill] has been selected as chair for the publishing industry panel, pages one and two of the speaker information materials, a copy of the speech, and a copy of the program; pages three and seven through twelve.

    Israel Bond Dinner

    A copy of an introduction given by Otis Chandler at the Israel Bond Dinner on December 10, 1969. He served as Honorary Chairman. Also included in this folder are three letters from Eugene L. Wyman, of the Law Offices of Wyman, Bautzer, Finell, Rothman & Kuchel, which he thanks Chandler for consenting to be the Honorary Chairman, sends him a copy of the invitation, and a copy of a typical letter requesting certain individuals to serve on the dinner committee; a letter from Otis Chandler to Eugene Wyman, informing him that Missy [Marilyn Brant Chandler] will be attending the dinner; and a memo from Freddie Miller, informing Chandler that he has three introductions to make at the dinner, but no speech.

Other items in this folder include a four page copy of an article from The Quill entitled "Assemble In Philadelphia"; a letter to Nancy Baltad from Otis Chandler, thanking her for her hospitality; a response letter from Nancy Baltad saying the pleasure was all hers letter from Robert S. McCord, Executive Editor at Arkansas Democrat, letting Chandler know he is going to be the one introducing him at the dinner; a letter from George A. Stauter, Chairman for Personnel '76 National Convention, regarding arrival plans; a thank you note from Sherry Stern, President of USC's Sigma Delta Chi Chapter; a note from Freddie Miller regarding hotel arrangements; four letters to Otis Chandler and a note to Freddie Miller from Henry Rieger, Vice President of Public Information at National Broadcasting Company, Inc., in which he invites him to be speaker, confirms the date, and sends his regrets for not attending; a letter from William Small, President of The Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, inviting Chandler on a walking tour; a letter from Freddie Miller to William Small informing him that Chandler will not be able to attend the tour due to his arrival time; a note from Nancy Baltad, Chapter Delegate of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and Hospitality Room Chairman, inviting Chandler to stop by the Hospitality room that the chapter and the LA Times are hosting; a letter to Russell E. Hurst requesting Chandler's biography, photograph and itinerary; three letters of praise, each has a thank you response letter from Otis Chandler; a letter, with an attachment, from Walter Burroughs informing Chandler of the compliments he's heard about the speech and also sends him a newsletter called "Update" which thanks Chandler for the great speech; and a four page edited copy of the speech sent out for reprint which has a note to Freddie Miller attached to it.
