The Life and Times of Los Angeles
Manuscripts
James Bassett started the research and writing of The Life and Times of Los Angeles, an official history of the newspaper supported by the Chandler family and Times Mirror. Because of this support, he was granted access to prominent employees and family members, as well as unrestricted access to the History Center. When Bassett died in 1978, Marshall Berges took on the task and the book was published in 1984. This series includes transcripts of his interviews (tapes are in the Audio-Visual Series of this collection), subject files of his research, and a typed manuscript. Date range is 1921-1987.

Los Angeles Times Addenda

The Los Angeles Times Addenda series numbers 14 boxes and contains annual and interim reports, press releases, executive rosters and guest books, and speeches by Times executives. It was added to the collection in 2008 and primarily reflects the activities of the Times and its executives circa 1980-2000. Annual reports from 1944-1989 were interfiled into existing Business Department Annual Report files. Duplicates in excess of 3 copies were deaccessioned. Includes media for select speeches (3.5" floppy discs and cassette tape recordings). Date range is 1961-2001.

On October 6, 1985, the first issue of Los Angeles Times Magazine, a full-color, magazine-size publication replacing both Home and West. This was the beginning of the modern iteration of the Sunday magazine. Date range is 1981-1989.

Los Angeles Times miscellaneous publications & supplements

The Times produced various supplements for advertising and other purposes. These include America's Prestige Motor Cars, First-Run, and various special issues like "Traveling in Style." Many of these appeared yearly. Separately housed is the front page of the Times from October 1, 1910, the day on which the Times building was bombed. Date range is 1910, 1929-1989.
