    Approx. 90 items: a collection of many of the letters and postcards sent to LAT expressing dismay that the daily Bible verse ("A Bible thought for today"), a feature of the paper for many years, had been discontinued. Also included is a selection of the "boilerplate" responses mailed back to readers. A minister, H.E. Fowler, 30th Street Congregational Church (L.A.) wrote: "Gentlemen, what has caused the "Bible Verse" to be left out of the Editorial section of your paper?"

    Mayoral endorsement

    Manuscripts

    Approx. 60 items: letters from readers opposing LAT's position on the 1969 L.A. Mayoral race (i.e. - LAT endorsed Tom Bradley over Sam Yorty) and either protesting the position or, in some cases, canceling their Times subscription. Attached to most of these letters is one of two standard LAT responses, one for those merely protesting the LAT position and another for those canceling their subscription.

    Approx. 35 items: letters generated by several incidents in which readers were offended by material that appeared (or failed to appear) in LAT. In one 1968 incident, many readers were offended by what they interpreted as a negative racial stereotype in an illustration that appeared in a Bible story in the comics section during 1/1968.

    PERSPECTIVE - Discontinued

    Approx. 55 items: letters (typed and handwritten) and post cards from readers disappointed by the discontinuance of the Perspective news feature in LAT. Many of the letters were from children and, judging from the handwriting many of these were as young as 10 or 11 years old. Typically the letters from young readers said that Perspective had helped them in their school work for history or current events.

Subjects and correspondents include: (7/30) 2-pp. reply to reader who disliked an Oliphant cartoon, describing the people depicted as "hideous characters"; (7/29) witty reply in praise of columnist Jack Smith; (7/28) reply to Charles T. Munger on "unfounded myths"; (7/28) West mag. minimum number of pages and advertising issues; 3-pp. letter to Sen. Sam Ervin (no date--has light blue paper clip); (7/21) reply to reader (Mr. Unger) who considered the comic strip "Doonesbury" an insult, with NBW thoughts on the "vitality" of that strip; NBW provides a thumbnail bio of himself and advice for students of communications / journalism (to Dr. Edwin Haroldsen of BYU); (7/16/) 3-pp. reply to Ed Dooley, Editor, S.F. Examiner, who had requested stats on "minorities" employed at LAT; (7/15) reply to Dr. Frederick Stare, nutritionist, who received criticism for his Spec. Section in LAT on health foods; memo to Dick Smith on dealing with subscription cancellation letters; (7/2) letter to Mr. Cox about LAT coverage of massage parlors; etc.
