A collection of 850 items from 1841 to 1922; it consists of personal and business papers, correspondence, speeches, and a journal of Charles Maclay. Subject matter includes the development of the town of San Fernando, California; politics in the 1860s and 1870s; Methodism in both Pennsylvania and California; and the Southern and Central Pacific Railroads. Correspondents in the collection include, among others, Charles Crocker, Mary E. Maclay Griswold, John J. Haley, Thomas G. McLeran, George Keating Porter, Leland Stanford, and Robert Maclay Widney.

Charles Wistar Stevens Papers

This collection contains correspondence and notes of New England doctor Charles W. Stevens (died 1901) and offers insight into 19th century medical practice. Included are Steven's inquiries concerning dropsy, diphtheria, and other diseases. The collection contains several diplomas and certificates received by Charles Wistar Stevens. Also included are three lists of the Stevens and Baker families. Among the notes included, three are in French (prescription lists) and one is in Spanish (a poem). Notable participants include Clarence J. Baker, Ephraim Cutter, Henry M. Field, Austin Flint, Abraham Jacobi, James Russell Lowell, Justin McCarthy, Edwin Whipple, Henry W. Williams, and Robert C. Winthrop.

This collection contains the papers of French-American jurist John Bouvier (1787-1851) and his family in Pennsylvania, including Bouvier's daughter astronomy writer Hannah Mary Bouvier Peterson (1811-1870), his son-in-law Robert Evans Peterson (1812-1869) and the Petersons' son-in-law Philadelphia publisher George William Childs (1829-1894). The papers include letters, documents, and photographs document the family history; personal affairs of John Bouvier; political affairs, including charges of corruption against Pennsylvania Governor William Findlay (1817-1820); Democratic-Republican politics in Pennsylvania (1820-1824), correspondence and business papers Robert Evans Peterson and his wife Hannah Mary Bouvier Peterson (1811-1870), including correspondence concerning Hannah Peterson's astronomy works and her text on astronomy from people eminent in the field. Some of the letters contain corrections of information found in the book; there are also incoming correspondence and documents pertaining to the personal affairs of George William Childs. In addition, there is one box of photographs of military figures, primarily American, and Presidents. Correspondents include James Todd, Alexander James Dallas, Joseph Ritner, Samuel Austin Allibone, James Thomas Fields, Frederick Edwin Church, Charlotte Saunders Cushman, George William Curtis, Henry Martyn Hoyt, and others. There are 29 pieces of John Bouvier and 30 pieces of James Todd Some notable items include: Bouvier, John. Entry regarding the War of 1812 in his journal. June 1, 1813. Dallas, Alexander James. Hague and mining, including the South Sea Expedition of 1858 to 1861, the Calumet and Hecla copper mines in Michigan from 1863 to 1914, and other mining companies in the Western U.S. and in Mexico. Also included in the collection are a few drawings and letters of Mary Hallock Foote; materials related to James D. Hague's father, Rev. William Hague (1808-1887); and Prince Heinrich of Prussia's visit to the United States in 1902.
