    Widney family papers, (bulk 1868-1935)

    The collection of 45 items consists primarily of diaries, reminiscences and legal documents that relate to Widney family history and the history of Los Angeles and its environs during the last quarter of the 19th century. Subjects include: Widney-Workman family history, the Mormons in Illinois, an overland journey to California in 1856 (recorded in a journal kept by Sarah Johnston Barnes), the anti-Chinese riot of November 1871 in Los Angeles, and education and religion in late 19th century Los Angeles. There is also a typescript copy of Boyle Workman's book, The City that Grew, which traces the history of Los Angeles from the time of the Workman-Rowland party to 1935; additionally, there is a scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to the book. Persons represented in the collection include Sarah Johnston Barnes, Robert Maclay Widney, Mary Barnes Widney, Martha Frances Widney Workman, and Boyle Workman.

    Jessie Lennox and Dr. Lilias Maclay correspondence

    The collection contains seventeen letters. Fourteen letters were written and signed by Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, to her friend and student Jessie Lennox from 1883 to 1896. The correspondence discusses the evolving role of nurses, the challenges faced by women in the field, and the ideal qualities of a nursing leader. A 1900 facsimile letter addressed to all her nurses and signed by Nightingale discusses medical advancement and nursing professionalization. The collection also includes a 1917 letter from Jessie Lennox to Dr. Lilias Maclay that mentions Nightingale's legacy and a 1933 letter from Lennox's lawyer following her death that bequeaths her correspondence with Nightingale to Maclay.

    Charles King papers

    Manuscripts

    A collection of 44 items which consists primarily of correspondence by Charles King to fellow soldier George O. Eaton. In these letters, King reminisces about his time in the military and his involvement in the Indian Wars under General Crook. He writes about Buffalo Bill; George Crook; George Custer; Sitting Bull; Alfred Terry; the Shoshoni Indians; the Apache Indians; the Yavapai Indians; and the Wisconsin National Guard. There are also letters by George O. Eaton and Walter Scribner Schuyler, which are about their experiences in the U.S. military. The ephemera consists of photographs of George O. Eaton and William Henry Corbusier (a fellow soldier and addressee in the collection), two printed items and five newspaper clippings regarding Charles King's military career, George Custer and Buffalo Bill.

    Charles Nordhoff Papers

    Professional and personal papers of writer Charles Nordhoff (1887-1947). The material consists of typescripts of Nordhoff's works, correspondence to and from Charles Nordhoff to his co-author James Hall, to various publishers, and letters to and from a variety of friends and relations, including former Secretary of the Interior Gifford Pinchot, Adlai Stevenson, A.P. Watt, Ellery Sedgwick, and others. The collection includes typescripts of Nordhoff's works, extensive family and writing-related correspondence, numerous photographs, and copies of magazines, journals, and comic books in which articles or works by Nordhoff were published. There are approximately one dozen items in French, primarily incoming correspondence.
