Manuscripts

The collection primarily consists of incoming correspondence to the Wells, Van Dyke, & Lee law firm from their various clients and legal colleagues. The content of the cases represented is mainly civil, most heavily focused on divorces, estate settlements, and patents, as well as some correspondence on Mission Indian land cases, suits against railroads, water rights, and mining disputes. There are also a variety of advertisements from publishers, typewriter merchants, and other business connections, as well as a very few outgoing letters from Wells, Van Dyke, & Lee and limited personal correspondence. In addition to facts regarding specific cases, the letters provide an overview of general social issues, law fees and practices, property laws, patent laws, the status of women, child custody laws, divorce laws, and prevailing views of divorce in 1880s California. Some notable correspondents include Lucky Baldwin, theologian John Alonzo Fisher, American Bar Association co-founder Henry Hitchcock, California governor Henry Harrison Markham, US Secretary of State James Davis Porter, Coca-Cola Bottling Company founder B.F. Thomas, and Lucky Baldwin's ranch manager Hiram Unruh. The collection also includes the Superior Court Registry of Actions, Vol. 3 (1886-1888).

John C. Palmer diary

Manuscripts

Palmer's diary gives detailed descriptions of the towns in Mexico in which his regiment passed and in which they camped, such as Monclova and Saltillo, Mexico, as well as the people he encountered along the way including some friends he knew before the war. Palmer often complains about marching, the camp conditions, the treatment of the volunteers by the regulars, and his commanding officers. He specifically mentions Captain Albert Pike, Major Solon Borland, Major General Zachary Taylor, Brigadier General John Wool, Colonel Archibald Yell, and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Palmer gives a detailed description of his experience in the Battle of Buena Vista and of the battlefield the morning after the battle

John C. Gowan letter to William Barton

Manuscripts

An autograph letter written and signed by John C. Gowan from Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico to William Barton in Providence, Rhode Island in early 1888. The letter contains important observations on the development of southern California and northern Mexico. Gowan writes of the temperate climate and how it helped with his chronic medical condition; he also goes on at length about the business opportunities in southern California, particularly Pasadena. He relays news of the church he and his congregation built in Baja California, and that it is slowly growing; Gowan also provides details about the fertile land and the crops which were grown in the area. He describes the United States business development by the International Company of Mexico and the plans to build railroads, roads, and telegraph lines. The letter has a small hole burned into the second page but overall it is in good condition.

John C. Fall letter to Henry Goode Blasdel

Manuscripts

Fall writes to Blasdel, the governor of Nevada, that his town of Unionville "is under control of a mob." He reports a group of armed miners has banded together to force out the town's population of "Chinamen," who are in fear for their lives. Fall reports his mills have ceased operation due to this incident, and that the local law enforcement has been ineffective in restoring order.. Printed Western Union Telegraph Company telegram forms, filled in by hand.
