Henry Huntley Haight letter to John Thompson Hoffman

Haight reports that he has received Hoffman's letter regarding the case of James Fitzmorris, and gives his opinion on the matter, which concerns Fitzmorris' attempted robbery of a jeweller's shop in Sacramento "with an iron wrench in hand." Fitzmorris, who may have been drinking before the incident, allegedly planned to murder the jeweller as well, but was unsuccessful, and fled when the injured shopkeeper called for help. Letters from Eliza Fall to William Henry Harrison, the editor, concerning the publication of her volume, Poems, under the pseudonym Mary Maynard. John Ruskin is a frequent subject of discussion in the letters along with several other leading literary figures of their day. The collection includes several manuscript versions of her poems and a translation of a poem by Johann Ludwig Uhland.

Albion C. Sweetser letters to Alvah Littlefield and A. Blood

In these two letters written during February 1851 (HM 4189 written the 14th, HM 4190 dated the 26th), Sweetser writes of a damaged crate of goods shipped to him, business details, and his inquiry into the circumstances surrounded the death of a Mr. Gliden. He reports that business in general has taken a downturn, and writes of the potential profits should they all decide to sell the business and the land where it is located. In HM 4190, Sweester writes a fight between a gambler and a miner that resulted in the death of a bystander from a gunshot wound. Eight hours after the incident, the miner responsible for firing the fatal shot was put to death by public hanging; an example, Sweester reports, of the speed of California justice.

BLASDEL, Henry Goode To Senate and Assembly of Nevada

Collection consists mainly of correspondence from the period 1910-14, beginning when Oddie initiated his campaign for governor and ending when he was about to terminate his administration. The correspondence is arranged in 19 boxes in alphabetical order by author. There are also 6 boxes and 4 rolls of Nevada State papers, almost entirely copies of legislative bills for the year 1873, and a small number of documents from other years. Subjects include: mining, politics, and government in Nevada (including divorce laws), women's rights, the financial panic of 1907, the Progressive party, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.

Letters to William Henry Harrison

44 signed handwritten letters and 1 incomplete handwritten letter to Harrison concerning her efforts to have a volume of her poetry published in the latter part of 1851. Letters after the publication in 1851 of her Poems discuss possible strategies for advertising the volume and the possible publication of some of her translations of the poetry of Johann Ludwig Uhland. In the course of the letters Eliza Fall decides on her nom de plume Mary Maynard and she insists that her real identity be kept a secret, especially from her father, who was apparently incapable of appreciating poetry. John Ruskin and his work are frequently the subject of the letters. See Ruskin's Praeterita for his opinion of Eliza Fall.
