A collection of manuscripts, photocopies and a photo album related to Ernest J. Waddell and his life. The collection contains various chapters from Waddell's autobiography entitled: "Ernest Remembers His Youth;" the chapters include autograph, typewritten, and photocopied sections. It is not clear if any of the autograph sections were written by Waddell or were written, typed and copied later by a family member. The chapters include growing up in Nebraska, gold mining in the Klondike, and shipping live cattle from Boston to Liverpool, England. The photo album is embossed "W H" on the cover and contains family photographs from trips to Yosemite, Hawaii, Niagara Falls, Florida, Ireland, Scotland, England, and Norway.

Russell, Majors and Waddell records, (bulk 1838-1868)
Manuscripts
A collection of 508 items from 1838 to 1903, it consists of the business and legal records of Russell, Majors and Waddell. It includes material about freighting operations, the mercantile business, land transactions in Kansas and Missouri, and the Pony Express. The company also hauled supplies for the U. S. Army during the 1857 to 1858 Utah Expedition (Utah War). The material consists of business papers, documents, correspondence (both business and personal), bills, receipts and ephemera. Persons represented in the collection include: Robert B. Bradford, Charles Byers, Alexander Majors, William Hepburn Russell, John W. Waddell, Robert Fielding Waddell, and William Bradford Waddell.

Ernest Clark Steele begins his diaries as a student at Daybrook High School in Monogalia County, West Virginia. The entries from 1915 through 1918 are primarily short remarks about his location (whether he's at home or school) and the weather. His entries become lengthier with a bit more details about his daily activities after he enters West Virginia University. In addition to entries about his early years as a principal at Oceana and teacher at Pineville, he writes about his summertime gig in the Equipment Department of the Swarthmore Chautauqua Association from 1921 through 1927. In August 1927, he enters the University of California, Berkeley. During this period, he writes about his studies, extracurricular activities, and going to church.
